Gillespie’s Walk-Off Heroics Lead Softball 6-4 Over No. 17 Georgia

Ole Miss Takes Game One on Senior Catcher’s Two-Run Blast
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss (20-10, 4-3 SEC) came out on top in a back-and-forth affair over No. 17 Georgia (21-4, 2-2 SEC) on Friday night, taking down the Bulldogs behind Autumn Gillespie's walk-off bomb in the seventh to earn a 6-4 win in game one of the series.
Savannah Diederich earned the win out of the bullpen, pitching three scoreless innings while striking out five and allowing just a single Georgia hit. Anna Borgen took a no decision after making the start, allowing four runs (one earned) on seven hits in four full innings.
The Bulldogs got on the board first in the third, utilizing a trio of singles to open scoring for the night. However, Ole Miss responded immediately as Tate Whitley and Blaise Biringer notched back-to-back knocks before Paige Smith cleared the bases with a big hack, launching a three-run home run to left center.
The see-saw continued into the fourth, as Georgia took advantage of a crucial Rebel error, scoring three unearned runs to regain the lead at. The Rebels once again had a response, loading the bases in the fifth and pouncing on a throwing error in center to bring Whitley home as the tying run, bringing the score to 4-4.
That set the stage for Gillespie's big moment. With Macey Keester representing the winning run at second base, the senior made the extra runner academic with a big hack, sending a line drive to right out in a hurry. With as much time as she'd like, the Rebel back stop sprinted around the bases, celebrating the win with her team at the plate.

• Ole Miss extended its program-record (single season) home winning streak to 13 games, while the victory was the 24th in a row in Oxford all together for the Rebels.
• Gillespie's home run was her second of the season and the 15th of her career. It was the first walk-off home run since Kacey Hvitved's grand slam in 2020 against Jackson State and the first non-run rule walk off home run since Abbey Latham's walk off grand slam against Florida in 2019.
• Paige Smith also homered, extending her team lead to eight. Smith also took sole possession of the team RBI lead at 22.
