Rebels Excel with 15 Event Wins to Conclude Ole Miss Classic
3/27/2021 | Track and Field
Ole Miss Returns Home April 9-10 for the Joe Walker Invite
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss men's and women's track & field concluded its first home meet of 2021 in style, nabbing 15 total event wins at Day Two of the Ole Miss Classic on Saturday.
Those titles were an even 7-7 split between the women and men, but the Rebels were also blessed with three multiple-event winners –highlighted by Brandee Presley and Kieshonna Brooks on the women's side.
Presley, an All-American and the Ole Miss record holder in the 100-meter dash, improved for the second straight week to open this outdoor season, winning the 100 at 11.38 (+0.1), currently the No. 3 time nationally at this early stage of outdoor competition. She followed that up with a win in the 200 into a slight headwind at 23.80 (-0.3), coming within two hundredths of her PR to slot her at No. 9 in the NCAA.
Brooks, meanwhile, was in just her second meet in more than a year, and came away with big wins in the 100-meter hurdles and long jump. Brooks' win in the long jump was at an impressive season-best 6.14m/20-01.75, the NCAA's 13th-best jump this year that came in at a windy +3.1 but is still less than the NCAA qualifying threshold of 4.0.
Her win in the hurdles was at a wind-legal season-best of 13.70 (+0.7), the 27th-best nationally at this stage, and it was by a wide-margin, topping the next-best finisher by more than half a second.
Lyndsey Reed led a recently red-hot Rebel pole vault group that stuffed the results sheet in the women's competition Saturday. Reed won on an overall career-best height of 4.16m/13-07.75, which she cleared on her first attempt. That jump makes her the fourth-best vaulter in program history, as well as fourth-best in the NCAA at the moment. Freshman Samara McConnell took runner-up at 4.06m/13-03.75, Alex Brooks notched her first outdoor mark as a Rebel in third at 3.86m/12-08 (10th all-time), while Elizbaeth Nix and Remy Guertel both tied for sixth at 3.71m/12-02.
Cade Bethmann ended up as the victor in a men's 800-meter race designed to go fast. All-American John Rivera Jr. brought the pack through 400 in 53.48 and hopped off the track with 200 to go, leaving Bethmann, Marcus Dropik and Jacob Lough to sprint to the finish. Bethmann was across first at 1:48.93 (No. 4 NCAA), while Dropik and Lough both posted PRs, with Dropik taking fourth at 1:51.17 (No. 20 NCAA) and Lough fifth at 1:51.32 (No. 22 NCAA).
Ole Miss also had an excellent day in both 400-meter dashes, both by Oxford natives. Orianna Shaw blazed to the women's win in 54.72, a career-best that puts her No. 11 all-time and No. 17 in the NCAA. James Burnett, who hadn't run since the 2020 indoor season until last week, clocked an Ole Miss outdoor PR of 47.03 – the 23rd-best nationally this season and 15th-best in school history.
Other event winners for Ole Miss on Saturday included Cate Tracht in the women's 1500-meter (4:29.78, No. 15 all-time), Lisa Vogelgesang in the women's 3K (9:44.82), Kenney Broadnax in the men's 110-meter hurdles (13.95/+2.4), Allen Gordon in both the high jump (2.06m/6-9) and long jump (7.62m/25-0), Cole Colozzo in the men's pole vault (5.07m/16-07.50), and the men's 4x400-meter relay of Burnett, Elijah Dryer, Alvin Westbrook and Tristyn Wooley (3:13.28, No. 21 NCAA).
Ole Miss ran into strong competition in the women's throws events on Saturday, but that didn't stop the Rebels from collecting a bevy of personal bests. Tedreauna Britt is already in prime shape in the discus, finishing runner-up at a near two-foot PR of 54.51m (178-10) – third-best all-time and currently No. 11 in the NCAA. Other Rebel women notching career days in the discus include Jasmine Mitchell in fourth at 49.53m/162-06 (No. 6 all-time), Jalani Davis in fifth at 49.11m/161-01 (No. 7 all-time) and Deborah Bulai in 10th at 46.39m/152-02 (No. 8 all-time). Shey Taiwo also made the final, finishing sixth at 49.00m/160-09.
Davis had a terrific day overall, as she led the Rebel women in the shot put with a five-foot outdoor PR of 16.05m (52-08.00) – the sixth-best toss in Ole Miss history and the No. 18 throw in the NCAA this season.
Ole Miss track & field will take a much-needed week of rest following a month-long stretch that included the SEC Indoor Championships (Feb. 25-27), NCAA Indoor Championships (March 11-13), NCAA Cross Country Championships (March 15), Auburn's Tiger Track Classic (March 19-20) and this weekend's home meet. The Rebel squads will both return on April 9-10 for the Joe Walker Invite.
