Suber Earns Fourth Straight Top-10 Finish

3/28/2021 | Men's Golf

WEST POINT, Miss. – One day after setting the record for the lowest round in Old Waverly Collegiate Championship history, Jackson Suber shot a final round 73 (+1) to remain in the top five and lead the Ole Miss men's golf team on a difficult Sunday afternoon. Suber ended the 54-hole tournament at 5-under (75-63-73—211), tying for fourth for his fourth straight top-10 finish.

The Rebels placed ninth as a team (296-273-299—868) after a 299 (+11) during the final round. Only two of the 14 teams in the field shot under par over the final 18 holes, one of them being tournament winner No. 13 Georgia (283-277-284—844).

"I'm proud of the way the guys hung in there after getting off to a poor start," said head coach Chris Malloy. "However, we are going to have to find a way to eliminate the early mistakes. We don't have to look very far to find our area of weakness, and that was on the greens this week. If we can eliminate the three putts, then we will have an opportunity to win any tournament that we play."

Due to rain Saturday night and into Sunday, morning tee times were changed to a 12 p.m. CT shotgun start for the teams. The Rebels started on holes 7-10 and had trouble finding early birdies. Suber finally got a pair, going back-to-back at the 14th and 15th. A bogey on No. 16 pushed him back to even on the back nine, and he parred his final 11 holes to end the day at 1-over. Along with another top-five finish, Suber led the 84-man field in par 3 scoring (-2) throughout the week.

Sarut Vongchaisit was right behind Suber with a 74 (+2), recording a team-high four birdies throughout his final round. The Bangkok, Thailand, native completed his back nine with three birdies over a four-hole stretch. It started at the par 5 15th before he added a deuce on the par 3 17th. For the second straight day, he birdied the tough 18th hole to fire a 34 (-2) on the back side. Vongchaisit ended the tournament at ever par (74-68-74—216) to tie for 22nd, his best finish of the 2020-21 season. He played the par 4s 2-under, ranking third in the field.

Jack Gnam also finished even following 54 holes of play (72-69-75—216) to sit alongside Vongchaisit on the individual leaderboard. His lone birdie on Sunday occurred at the par 5 second. Gnam's 40 pars during the tournament were the third-most by any golfer.

The Rebels have one more tournament before heading to St. Simons Island, Georgia for the SEC Championship (April 21-25). After a week off, Ole Miss heads to Alabama for The Country Club of Birmingham Invitational (April 5-7). The tournament was originally slated to take place at Shoal Creek Club, but a tornado that swept through the area this past week damaged several holes to force the tournament to switch locations.
