Borgen's Career Day Leads Softball Over No. 17 Georgia

3/28/2021 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. – With the series up for grabs Sunday at the Ole Miss Softball Complex, the Rebels came out of the gates swinging then rode the left arm of starting pitcher Anna Borgen to a 3-2 victory over No. 17 Georgia.

Making her third start of the weekend, Borgen was nothing short of electric, picking up her seventh win of the season after going seven strong with two runs allowed on six hits, blowing away her career-high for strikeouts with 11.

Ole Miss (21-11, 5-4 SEC) attacked early, immediately putting together a threat through a leadoff walk from Blaise Biringer and a Paige Smith single. With Biringer at third, Latham got her job done, lifting a sacrifice fly to center field to open scoring.

Ole Miss added on in the second, loading the bases on a leadoff single from Sydney Gutierrez and back-to-back walks from Jessica Puk and Mikayla Allee. A Tate Whitley HBP and a passed ball followed, bringing in a pair to put the Rebs up 3-0 after two.

Georgia (22-5, 3-3 SEC) got one back in the fifth, though Borgen worked well to limit the damage to a minimum. The senior ultimately struck out the side, coming up clutch and getting Jaiden Fields chasing to leave the bases loaded.

After a scoreless sixth, Georgia cut the lead down to one with a solo shot in the seventh. Still, Borgen was unfazed, striking out the save to lock down the series for the Rebels

Quick Hits
• Ole Miss has won two of its first three SEC series for the second time in school history, last accomplishing the feat in 2019 when the Rebels won six of eight series total.
Anna Borgen nearly doubled her career high in strikeouts with 11. Previously, the senior had never struck out more than six batters in a game.
• Paige Smith was retired just twice on the weekend, finishing with a .667 batting average an .800 on-base percentage in the series. The sophomore recorded four hits, three RBIs, a home run, two walks and a pair of HBPs.

Up Next
