Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Over NDSU to Stay Perfect at Home

3/6/2021 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss (12-7) improved to 5-0 at home on Saturday, setting aside North Dakota State (1-8) in both ends of its doubleheader on Day Two of the Ole Miss Classic.

GAME ONE | Ole Miss 8, North Dakota State 0 (6)
For the fourth time in as many games, Ole Miss benefited from lockdown stuff in the circle as Anna Borgen twirled a gem on the rubber. The lefty got plenty of help from the offense as well, with the Rebels scoring in four of six innings in a run-rule victory over the Bison.

Borgen pitched her second-consecutive complete game shutout, tossing a masterful six innings with two hits allowed and three strikeouts, facing just two batters over the minimum.

Paige Smith and Abbey Latham led the way offensively for the Rebs with three hits apiece, while Blaise Biringer and Sydney Gutierrez also registered multiple hits. Six different Rebels tallied RBIs, with Latham and Gillespie leading the way with a pair.

Gillespie got the Rebels going in the second, drilling a double to left-center to bring in Gutierrez and Latham. The next inning, Biringer ripped a leadoff double and came around later on an Aynslie Furbush grounder to put Ole Miss up 3-0.

After Smith led off the fifth with a no-doubt homer over the left field bleachers, Latham plated Maddi Banks with a sharp single up the middle and came around to score herself on a Kelsha Loftin single, making it three runs in the inning.

A Gabby Alvarez fielder's choice scratched across Macey Keester in the sixth and Latham ended things early shortly after, roping a double to the left field wall, allowing Nyomi Jones to trot home and bring the run rule into effect.

GAME TWO | Ole Miss 3, North Dakota State 1
For the first time in 2021, Ole Miss had to battle back from a home deficit, quickly erasing an early Bison lead to complete the doubleheader sweep and move to a perfect 5-0 at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.

Landyn Bruce picked up her second win in the circle, surrendering a single run in four innings of work. Ava Tillmann garnered the save, pitching the final three frames with just a single hit and walk allowed, striking out three.

Snapping a streak of 26-straight scoreless innings for Ole Miss, North Dakota State got on the board in the first inning, stringing together three singles. The Rebs answered right back in the home half, with Smith blasting her second dinger of the day over the left field fence to put Ole Miss up 2-1.

Smith kept her bat hot and scored an insurance run in the fourth, coming home on Gutierrez's double to the gap in right center.

That would be all the scoring the Rebels would see but it was more than enough as Bruce and Tillmann locked things down the rest of the way.

Quick Hits
• With the 8-0 victory in the first game of the day, Ole Miss posted a shutout in four-straight games for the first time in program-history. The Rebels strung together 26-consecutive scoreless innings, with four different pitchers seeing action during the run.
Anna Borgen pitched her second complete game shutout in a row in the game one victory. The lefty has not allowed a run in any of her last 16 innings of work. Borgen leads the team with a 0.68 ERA and a 0.73 WHIP.
• Ole Miss' game one victory was its sixth run rule win of the season.
Paige Smith finished the day 5-for-7 at the plate with a pair of home runs, three runs scored and three RBIs. Smith is now tied for the team lead with five big flies in 2021. Smith is batting .700 over the last five games.
Abbey Latham batted 4-for-6 on the day with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and two runs driven in. The senior recorded three hits and reached base in all four plate appearances in the first game of the doubleheader.
Sydney Gutierrez and Blaise Biringer both also recorded four hits on the day. Biringer has posted at least one hit in 15-of-19 games during her rookie season.
