Loyola-Maryland Transfer Set School Scoring Record Last Season
OXFORD, Miss. – Evan Brown, who set Loyola University Maryland's school record for scoring average last season, has signed a national letter of intent to join the Rebels as a graduate transfer for the 2021-22 season, head coach Chris Malloy announced Monday.
"Adding a player of Evan's caliber will help take our program to another level," said Malloy. "He is already a veteran at the collegiate level, and his experience will prove to be valuable. We can't wait for him to join our team this fall."
Brown is still competing for the Greyhounds this season, leading the team with a 71.07 stroke average. The Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, native is coming off a victory this past weekend at the Rutherford Intercollegiate hosted by Penn State (April 17-18). His 11-under 202 (71-65-66) set a tournament record as he cruised to a six-shot win and led Loyola to a runner-up finish. Brown's second round 65 (-6) was a career low, and he ran away from the field with a 66 (-5) in the final round.
With three more top-five finishes, Brown has earned Patriot League Golfer of the Week accolades three times this spring. He has won the weekly award nine times throughout his career, a Patriot League record. With medalist honors over the weekend, he is in a good position to claim the honor for a 10th time.
Brown began the 2021 season by tying for fourth at the Ross Collegiate Classic (March 8-9) before a runner-up performance at the ECU Intercollegiate (March 22-23) that included a 66 (-6) in the second round. Earlier this month (April 12-13), Brown placed third at the Mountaineer Invitational.
As a junior, Brown set single-season school records for stroke average (70.95) and average versus par (-0.47) on his way to being named Loyola Junior Male Athlete of the Year. He finished runner-up twice and was named PING All-Northeast Region for the second time in his career after the season was shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Off the course, Brown earned All-America Scholar status from the Golf Coaches Association of America.
After appearing in three tournaments as a freshman, Brown had a breakout sophomore season. He played in all 11 tournaments, recording a 72.24 stroke average on his way to earning All-Patriot League First Team and PING All-Northeast Region honors. During the spring, he placed top five in five of the Greyhounds' six tournaments. That included a fourth-place showing at the Patriot League Championships.
