Vongchaisit Paces Ole Miss Golf in Opening Round
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – It's not how you start, but how you finish. The Ole Miss men's golf team has 36 holes to finish strong after a difficult first day at the SEC Championship (April 21). The Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club proved to be a tough test as only three of the 14 teams posted under-par rounds with No. 10 Georgia leading the way at 5-under.
The Rebels sit in 14th place with a 299 (+19). With two rounds of stroke play remaining, they still have time to rally and crack the top eight for match play where it becomes anyone's championship.
"In golf, you have to take the good days with the bad," said head coach Chris Malloy. "Certainly, today was a terrible day for us and not the start we were looking for. However, we have two rounds left to scratch our way back into contention for match play. I know that we are looking forward to getting back out on the course tomorrow and get this bad taste out of our mouths."
Sarut Vongchaisit, who attended high school in St. Simons at Frederica Academy, led Ole Miss in the opening round with a 72 (+2). The junior recorded a pair of birdies, one on each side, while making the fewest miscues among the Rebel lineup. Brett Schell was not far behind, firing a 73 (+3). Appearing in his first conference championship, the redshirt freshman ended his round with a birdie on the par 4 ninth.
Ole Miss begins the second round at 7:10 a.m. CT Thursday morning (April 22). It will be a rivalry pairing as the Rebels tee off with 13th-place Mississippi State.
