Biringer Walks Off Auburn in 1-0 Thriller

4/23/2021 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss (30-15, 11-8 SEC) and Auburn (25-15, 5-11 SEC) needed extra innings to decide the series opener on Friday, with the Rebels' Blaise Biringer coming through with an RBI single in the eighth for a 1-0 walk off victory.

Recording her fifth shutout of the season, Anna Borgen was nothing short of electric in the win. The senior pitched all eight innings, holding the Tigers to four hits while striking out five. The lefty did it by pounding the zone, recording a strike on 72 of her 98 offerings.

Ole Miss had chances throughout the ball game, putting a runner in scoring position in the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. However, the Rebels were unable to cash in. On the other side, Borgen and the defense also worked out of danger on several occasions, leaving a runner at third in each of the fifth through seventh frames.

After a 1-2-3 top of the eighth, the Rebels immediately put pressure on Tiger starter Shelby Lowe, loading the bases on a Jessica Puk single, Sydney Gutierrez walk and Abbey Latham HBP. That brought up Biringer, who punched a single through the middle of the infield, bringing her teammates charging out of the dugout to celebrate the win.

Quick Hits
• The Rebels improve to 20-2 at home, including 8-2 in SEC play.
• Ole Miss' 11 SEC victories are tied for the second most in program history, also accomplished in 2007 and 2016.
Anna Borgen picked up her 10th victory of the season, tying Savannah Diederich for the team lead.
• It was Borgen's fifth complete game shutout of the season, second in league action. The senior has allowed one earned run of fewer in 19-of-25 appearances.
• Overall, Friday's win was the 15th shutout of the season for Ole Miss, tied for fourth most in the nation.
• For Biringer, it was the ninth game in the last 10 with at least one base hit and the third multi-hit game in that frame.
• Also posting a pair of hits, Jessica Puk's game-winning run was her 27th of the season, extending her team lead.
