Rebel Senior Earns Third Second Place Finish of the Season
BATON ROUGE, La. – The Ole Miss women's golf team wrapped up regular season play with their third runner-up finish of the season Wednesday afternoon at the LSU Tiger Golf Classic in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
The fifth-ranked Rebels finished the two-day event with an 874 (287-295-292) and tied for second with Vanderbilt. Senior Julia Johnson led the Rebels with a runner-up individual finish, her sixth straight top 10 finish.
"We played another elite field this week with tough conditions once again," head coach Kory Henkes said. "The course played really firm and demanded smart golf shots. The tee ball was critical to keep in play this week and I think we did a great job of staying patient and adjusting to the firmness of the course and wind.
"I'm really proud of the team on another second place finish. We have a few days to sharpen up a few areas of our game before heading to the SEC Championship."
Johnson, a senior from St. Gabriel Louisiana, used a third round 70 (-2) Wednesday to move up six spots on the leaderboard to take home runner-up accolades. It was Johnson's third second place finish of the spring season.
"Julia fought hard and produced another stellar runner-up finish," Henkes said. "She has been close so many times this year and I know a win is just around the corner for her. She gives it her all every time she tees it up and I am proud of her fight week in and week out."
Johnson finished second in the field with 14 birdies over the course of 54 holes. She has shot a 73 or better in 12 of her 15 total rounds this spring.
Senior Kennedy Swann and sophomore Chiara Tamburlini turned in top 20 finishes for the Rebels. The duo both shot a three-round 219 and tied for 16th.
Swann, coming off a third place showing at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, carded a 74 on Wednesday to end the tourney at 3-over (70-75-74—219). It was Swann's sixth top 20 finish of the season.
Tamburlini, a native of St. Gallen, Switzerland, shot her third consecutive round of 1-over par at the University Club. She led the field in par-5 scoring (-6) in Baton Rouge.
Andrea Lignell, a sophomore from Gothenburg, Sweden, turned in another round of 3-over, 75, and tied for 39th place individually (75-75-75—225). Ellen Hume was also in action for the Rebels in Baton Rouge, carding a 232 (82-72-78) and finished in a tie for 63rd overall.
The Rebels will next travel to Birmingham, Alabama, for the SEC Championship, April 14-18. The tournament will consist of three rounds of stroke play (April 14-16), followed by match play (April 17-18) for the top eight seeds. The finals will be televised live on SEC Network Sunday.
