Impressive Field in Oxford for 2021 Joe Walker Invite

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss track & field will host one of the premiere meets in the nation this weekend at the fourth iteration of the Joe Walker Invite at the Ole Miss Track & Field Complex this weekend. Competition is set to begin with the beginning of the multi events at noon Friday before an action-packed evening of distance races. The meet will conclude on Saturday with competition resuming at 9:45 a.m. CT and a senior ceremony to honor 18 Rebels in their final home meet at 1:30 p.m. CT.
 
MEET NOTES
 
• This is the fourth Joe Walker Invite, which is named for the former Ole Miss track & field head coach who led the Rebels to 11 top-20 national finishes, 124 All-America honors, 12 NCAA individual champions and 60 SEC individual titles during his 30-year career in Oxford. Known for his ability to groom elite-level jumpers and hurdlers and for his warm and caring persona, Walker was inducted into the Ole Miss M-Club Alumni Hall of Fame in 2016 and the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.
 
• Oxford will be greeted by a large, star-studded field for the Joe Walker Invite this weekend. In attendance are 26 schools, 45 total teams, seven teams within the USTFCCCA top-25, 523 total athletes and 711 total entries into the meet.

• The crown jewel of the meet will be a series of high-octane invitational distance races set for Friday evening. Following the women's and men's 200-meter dashes set to begin at 6:30 p.m. CT, the mini carnival will begin with the men's 800-meter invite at 6:50 p.m., followed by the women's 1500-meter invite (7:05 p.m.), men's 3000-meter steeplechase invite (7:25 p.m.), women's 3000-meter steeplechase invite (7:45 p.m.), men's 1500-meter invite (8 p.m.), women's 800-meter invite (8:45 p.m.), women's 5K invite (8:55 p.m.) and men's 5K invite (9:35 p.m.)
 
• Attendance is open and free to the public. Spectators must wear masks upon entry, while in transit throughout the complex and are encouraged while seated. Fans are also encouraged to remain socially distanced throughout the stands. Spectators will be limited to the grandstand side of the facility and must enter through the northeast gate (near the corner of Hill Drive and Manning Way). Interaction between spectators and competing athletes/staff is prohibited.

• The 2017 season was the first for the renovated Ole Miss Track & Field Complex, which received $7.2 million in upgrades and can seat 1,500 spectators in its new design.

• Ole Miss is in year six under head coach Connie Price-Smith, who has led the Rebels to new heights in her time in Oxford with seven NCAA top-25 team finishes, four NCAA individual titles, 39 SEC individual titles and 98 First or Second-Team All-American awards. In 20 years as a head coach at both Ole Miss and Southern Illinois dating back to 2002, Price-Smith has collected 12 NCAA event titles and mentored 167 All-Americans on the track.
