Rebels Celebrate Senior Day with Pair of Ranked Wins
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss (34-16) took both games of its doubleheader on Saturday over No. 25 UCF (34-15-1), celebrating Senior Day by completing the sweep over the Knights at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
Prior to the day's action, Ole Miss celebrated it's 10-member senior class, celebrating the careers of Ava Tillmann, Sydney Gutierrez, Kacey Hvitved, Jessica Puk, Anna Borgen, Ally Mena, Autumn Gillespie, Abbey Latham, Kelsha Loftin and Gabby Alvarez as well as managers Allison Stark and Alexus Coleman.
Game One | 5-4 (10)
Ole Miss erased a four-run deficit in the early going, charging back to tie the game and eventually win in walk off fashion in the 10th inning to take game one of the doubleheader.
Borgen received a no decision in the starting role, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks in two frames. Tillmann came on in relief and was lights out, picking up the win with eight scoreless innings, scattering seven hits and striking out five.
After UCF got off to a first inning lead with a sacrifice fly, the Knights added on with three more in the second. Kaitlyn Jensen brought in the first two of the frame with a double to right-center, with Shannon Doherty following with an RBI single up the middle to make it 4-0.
Ole Miss, however, responded immediately in the home half, plating a pair on Gillespie's infield single when the UCF third baseman was unable to keep the bouncing grounder in front of her.
After a pair of scoreless frames, the Rebs fought back for two more runs in the fifth to tie the game. With a pair in scoring position, the throw came home on Blaise Biringer's grounder and was wild, allowing Latham to follow behind Macey Keester and score as well, deadlocking the score at four runs apiece.
From there, both teams would trade scoreless frames, forcing extra innings. The Knights nearly took the lead in the eight on Jada Cody's single through the right side but Latham's throw home was on the money, allowing Gillespie to apply the tag and cut down the runner attempting to score.
A couple of innings later, Gillespie ended it in the 10th. With runners on second and third, the Rebel backstop hit a cue shot back to Alea White in the circle, who didn't even make an attempt home as Loftin scored the walk off run.
Game Two | 10-0 (5)
Whereas the Knights jumped out early in the first game of the day, Ole Miss took command early on and never looked back in the nightcap, finishing off the sweep with a run rule victory.
Starter Savannah Diederich earned the win with four strong innings, allowing one hit with four strikeouts. Aynslie Furbush came in for one scoreless inning of relief.
After the first nine batters of the game were retired, the Rebels batted around in the second to blow things open. Alvarez got the scoring started with a bases-loaded walk, followed by a Mikayla Allee fielder's choice to make it 2-0. A wild pitch scored another Rebel run, before Gillespie brought home two more with a single to right field. A few pitches later, Puk belted an RBI double to left-center. Gillespie finished off scoring, coming across on Sydney ground ball.
Ole Miss added on in the fourth. Gutierrez watched ball four with the bases loaded for the eighth run, bringing the run rule in the equation, and Biringer ripped a two-run single down the right line to add on a couple of runs of insurance.
Furbush came on in the fifth to close the game, nipping the corner for strike number three and out number three to finish off the sweep of the 25th ranked Knights.
