Ole Miss 10K Runners Shine Under the Lights at Day One of SEC Outdoor Championships
5/13/2021 | Track and Field
Clio Ozanne-Jaques Earned Bronze Medal in Women’s 10K
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Ole Miss track & field's 10K runners ended the day in style, racking up a solid stash of points to close out Day One of the 2021 SEC Outdoor Championships on Thursday night.
Clio Ozanne-Jaques – who entered as the reigning silver medalist in the 10K – kept pace in a historically fast women's 10K race, finishing third at 33:44.78 in a heat that featured an SEC meet record from champion Mercy Chelangat of Alabama at 32:13.13. Ozanne-Jaques turned on her burners at the end to secure the bronze medal position, splitting 75.23 over her final 400 to distance herself by 16 seconds from Arkansas' Devin Clark.
Ozanne-Jaques was the leader of a pack of three Rebel scorers that totaled 10 points in the 10K on Thursday night. Victoria Simmons finished sixth at 34:32.60, while Ryann Helmers scored for the second consecutive SEC meet in eighth place at 34:46.75.
Senior Robinson Snider hung tight in an equally fast men's 10K final right beforehand. Snider took fifth overall at 29:34.61, a 16-second PR that moves him up to No. 6 all-time at Ole Miss and up to No. 40 on the NCAA East Region list. Snider was steadily in the top pack from gun to tape, briefly taking the lead at the 3200-meter mark but never using too much energy to fall off the leader's pace. Alabama's Vincent Kiprop won the title in 28:55.56.
In addition to the Rebel success in the late-night distance races, Ole Miss was also able to secure three spots in finals races on Saturday.
All-American Elijah Dryer became the first Rebel to qualify for the SEC men's 200-meter dash final since Jalen Miller in 2015, ripping off a big personal best amid a strong field of competitors to earn a time qualifier spot into Saturday's final. Dryer finished third in his heat and eighth overall at a wind-legal 20.88 (+1.8), the 12th-best time in Ole Miss history and the fastest time by a Rebel since Miller ran 20.76 (+1.9) in the 2014 SEC prelims. Furthermore, Dryer's time currently puts him right on the bubble of the NCAA East Regional cutoff at No. 47. Dryer ran in a first heat that included the current NCAA leader Terrance Laird of LSU, who ended up with the top qualifying time of the day at 20.13.
All-American senior Waleed Suliman took care of business in the men's 800-meter prelims, winning the fourth heat at 1:48.25 to earn an automatic qualifier into the final. Everett Smulders was also in that fourth heat, but fell heartbreakingly shy of snaring a time qualifier position, coming just three hundredths of a second short at the ninth-best prelim time of 1:49.64. All nine qualifiers for the final broke 1:50 in the prelim on Thursday. Also running for Ole Miss were Baylor Franklin (13th, 1:50.49), John Rivera Jr. (16th, 1:50.96) and Marcus Dropik (21st, 1:52.77).
Sophomore newcomer Sintayehu Vissa punched her second career ticket to an SEC 800-meter final in just her second try. Vissa, who finished fourth in the 800 at the SEC Indoor Championships back in February, earned a time qualifier slot after clocking 2:06.75 in the third heat. Vissa transferred to Ole Miss from Division II Saint Leo University this semester, and has since broken school records in the 1500-meter, mile, and was on the school record All-American distance medley relay squad indoors before playing a crucial role on the program-record NCAA 12th-place women's cross country team.
Competition resumes at Day Two of the SEC Outdoor Championships on Friday, with the Rebels getting started with the resumption of the men's decathlon at 1:45 p.m. CT.
