Rebel Women Secure Two More National Tickets at Conclusion of NCAA East Regional

5/29/2021 | Track and Field

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Ole Miss women's track & field put the cherry on top of an already astounding regional meet for the Rebels, securing two more tickets to the NCAA Outdoor Championships to break the all-time program record for most national entries at the conclusion of the 2021 NCAA East Regional on Saturday.

Ole Miss received qualifying performances on Saturday from Jalani Davis in the discus and the women's 4x100-meter relay, putting the Rebel total at 16 entries (eight men, eight women) from 16 athletes (seven men, nine women). The 16 total athletes stand as the second-most in program history, while the women's eight entries stand as the most ever to the outdoor national meet. Additionally, the nine women's athletes tie for the program record, while on the men's side the seven qualified athletes stand as the second-most ever by the Rebel men.

This turn of events at the regional meet – a week normally filled with stress and high anxiety in any other normal year – was welcome good news for sixth year head coach Connie Price-Smith and the Rebels amid the chaos of the last 15 months since the 2020 indoor national meet was canceled at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. For Price-Smith, this will be the largest group she has ever taken to the national meet across her illustrious career both at Ole Miss and her previous stop of 14 seasons, Southern Illinois.

"I am so very proud of this team and all they have accomplished this season," Price-Smith said. "It has been a tough one for sure, and I couldn't be happier for all of the athletes and coaches for the job they have done. It's not only our distance runners and throwers who are qualified. We have a track and field team that is qualified, and to me that is pretty amazing. Having athletes from all event areas is what we work hard to accomplish, and we're excited to get out to Eugene and see what we can do."

The day started with a rare feat, especially from a freshman. Jalani Davis, who had already punched tickets to Oregon for the national meet in the hammer and shot put on Thursday, stunned the discus competition with a spectacular performance. Davis was entered in the lowest-seeded Flight One, but unleashed a mammoth 14-foot PR on her final attempt to not only put herself into qualifying contention, but launch her into an elite company of Rebel discus throwers. Her toss of 56.23m (184-05) pushed her up to No. 3 all-time at Ole Miss, and makes her one of just three 180-foot discus throwers in program history behind Raven Saunders (186-06) and Janeah Stewart (185-0).

Davis' feat in accomplishing an NCAA triple is no easy task, let alone in those three throwing and it's especially daunting for a freshman. She is just the second Rebel to ever do so after NCAA Champion Janeah Stewart (2017), and this year she will be the lone thrower attempting all three in Eugene.

The women's 4x100-meter relay followed that by taking care of business, punching their ticket to the national meet for the sixth straight year. The quartet of Olivia Womack, Brandee Presley, Jayda Eckford and Toni Glatz strung together a superb performance, passing the stick around in 43.83 – the third-fastest time in school history and nearly a full second lower than their season-best entering the regional meet. This will be the second straight trip on the 4x1 for Presley and Eckford, who were on the school record team in 2019 that finished 12th at the NCAA meet at Texas. Glatz is no stranger to national competition either, running the 400-meter leg on Ole Miss' eighth-place distance medley relay team indoors this season, earning First-Team All-American honors in the process.

Presley nearly was able to book a return trip to nationals in the 100-meter dash as well, but in a gut-wrenching turn of events fell one one-hundredth of a second shy of a time qualifier slot to Eugene, finishing 12th overall at a season-best 11.28 (+0.0).

Ole Miss also received a career performance out of newcomer Sintayehu Vissa, but she ran into a buzzsaw of a women's 800-meter quarterfinal to wrap up an excellent first year with the Rebels. The field was the fastest in NCAA East Preliminary history, with 12 of the top-25 East Region times ever run clocked on Saturday. Amid that, Vissa was able to have a strong race of her own, running a new PR of 2:04.53 to finish fourth in her heat and 15th overall. In the East, she needed to run 2:02.81 or faster to get in on time, but in the West the final time qualifier slot sat at 2:07.14. That time by Vissa improves upon her slot on No. 2 all-time at Ole Miss, and is the fastest by a Rebel since 2015.

Competition at the NCAA Outdoor Championships runs June 9-12 at the newly renovated Hayward Field at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon. The meet will be televised and streamed live online via the ESPN family of networks.
