U.S. Olympic Trials Preview

Rebels Past and Present Represent Ole Miss at U.S. Olympic Trials

6/17/2021 | Track and Field

EUGENE, Ore. – A total of 14 past and present Ole Miss track & field athletes will vie for spots on Team USA at the upcoming U.S. Olympic Trials, held June 18-27 at the newly renovated Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.

This group of Rebels will be among some of the best in the world at the Trials, which returns after being postponed (along with the Olympics) in 2020 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. The goal in Eugene this week isn't just for the crown of being a U.S. champion, but for a qualifying spot on Team USA for the upcoming Tokyo Olympic Games in July. To qualify, athletes must finish within the top-three in their events and also own the Olympic qualifying standard. Thus, if an athlete finishes fourth and owns the standard but one of the top three do not, the third and final qualifying spot goes to the next person with the standard. That is good news for a large portion of the Ole Miss contingent in Eugene this week, as several already own the Olympic standard. Marks and times accepted as standards for both the Trials and the Olympics can come from as far back as 2019 due to the heavily downsized 2020 competition season for athletes around the globe.

The Trials return to Eugene and Hayward Field for the seventh time in its history, joining national qualifying meets also held in 1972, 1976, 1980, 2008, 2012 and 2016. However, this will be the first time in the newly renovated version of Hayward Field, which just wrapped up hosting the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Championships back on June 9-12. In addition to those seven U.S. Olympic Trials, Hayward Field has been the site of 17 NCAA Championship meets (1962, '64, '72, '78, '84, '88, '91, '96, 2001, '10, '13, '14, '15, '16, '17, '18, '21), seven U.S. Track & Field Championships (1986, '93, '99, 2001, '09, '11) and will also be host to the upcoming 2022 World Championships.

Ole Miss athletes have won 33 U.S. titles across both the indoor and outdoor seasons, with 20 coming outdoors and 17 of those outdoor champions coming since 2008. Combined, the 14 Ole Miss affiliated athletes in competition in Eugene own six Olympic Games berths, three Olympic medals, 25 U.S. titles, 25 international medals, 22 World Championships berths and nine NCAA titles. In its history, Ole Miss has secured 21 berths to the Summer Olympic Games – 13 of which have come from the Rebel track & field program.

Competition runs June 18-27 and fans can watch the action via the NBC family of networks. Read below for a full schedule of events and more info on the Rebel U.S. Olympic Trials qualifiers.
