Rebels Sweep Trojans to Kick off the Season

Ole Miss Defense Dominates Troy at the Net
TROY, Ala.— In its first non-conference match in almost two years, Ole Miss kicked off the 2021 season against Troy with a block party and a 3-0 sweep over the Trojans.
The Ole Miss defense powered by Sasha Ratliff and Payton Brgoch powered the Rebels to a total of 15 blocks as a team compared to one block on the night for Troy. Ratliff led the charge with eight blocks and notched a career-high hitting percentage at .800. Samantha Schnitta totaled a team-high 11 kills and added on a career-high 6 blocks.
Anna Bair got the Rebel offense started with her first of nine kills on the night to tie up the set early at two-all. Ole Miss began to climb out of an early deficit after giving up three straight points to the Trojans, pulling within three at 10-7 after a GG Carvacho kill. A 4-0 run brought Ole Miss within one, trailing 14-13. Ratliff's fourth block of the set highlighted a 3-0 Rebel run to pull within two at 22-20 before Ole Miss took control with its eighth block of the set to end a 4-0 run and take the set 25-23.
Ole Miss came into the second set hot with an 8-0 run to take an 8-2 lead, as the Rebel defense remained strong with 11 early blocks. Ratliff continued to be a force at the net, as the sophomore extended the Rebel lead to 13-4 with her eighth block. The Rebels led by as many as 13 and were able to hold off short Trojan rallies to pick up the set 25-10 and claim a 2-0 advantage.
Troy came out strong in the third set with six kills to hold a 6-4 lead over Ole Miss. The Rebels trailed by four before a timeout gave Ole Miss a burst of energy to cut the deficit to 9-7. Ole Miss continued to work its way back into the set with a 5-0 run, allowing the Rebs to take their first lead at 12-11. The set continued to play tight, knotted up at 20 apiece before the Rebels gained control with a 5-2 run to knock off the Trojans 25-22 and 3-0.
The Rebels are back in action tomorrow for their final match in Troy, Alabama, against UAB at 4 p.m. CT. The match will not be streamed but live stats will be available at OleMissSports.com.
