Rebels Defeat Blazers After Trailing in Two Sets

TROY, Ala.— In the final match of the Troy Preseason Invitational, Ole Miss clawed its way back in the first and third sets and maintained control the rest of the way to defeat UAB 3-0. Ole Miss opens the 2021 season 2-0 for the first time since 2016 and swept its opening two matches for the first time since 2014.

Sophomore Payton Brgoch had herself a day with a career-high 10 kills, hitting at a .500 clip, while GG Carvacho led the squad with 12 kills. Libero Sam Burgio anchored the Rebel back row with nine digs, and Kylee McLaughlin led the offense with 36 assists.

The match started off as a back and forth affair between the two teams with five ties and three lead changes in the first set. UAB took an early 11-6 lead, but back-to-back Carvacho kills assisted the Rebels to make their way back into the set. Ole Miss cut the deficit to one with a 4-0 run and only surrendered one more point to UAB as it came back to take the lead and the set off a 7-2 run at 25-22.

Set two began in a similar fashion, with both squads standing tough with the set tied up through five all. The Rebels started to control the set shortly after off a 5-0 run powered by two straight blocks from Sasha Ratliff to build a 12-6 lead. A UAB comeback attempt to cut the Rebel lead to two at 17-15, but Anna Bair halted it with her fifth kill of the day. The Rebel offense then heated up with Ratliff and Carvacho providing back-to-back kills to extend the lead to 22-16. Brgoch continued her career-day, slamming a kill to the UAB back row to win set two 25-19.

Despite playing behind early, trailing 7-3, Ole Miss worked its way back into the set with its fifth block of the day to pull within two at 8-6. Sam Burgio anchored the Rebels behind the line on a 3-0 run to pull back again within two at 11-9. The momentum stayed in the Rebel favor as Ole Miss took its first lead of the set at 13-12 on a 4-0 run after capitalizing off UAB errors. Tied at 15 all, a Bair kill with an assist from McLaughlin gave the Rebels a spark to build a 19-16 lead. Yet again, the Rebels thwarted off a Blazer comeback to win set three 25-21 and sweep the day 3-0.

The Rebels return home to host the Ole Miss Invite next weekend, September 3-4, at the Gillom Center. Ole Miss is set to play two matches Friday, taking on UTSA at 12 p.m. CT, followed by Coastal Carolina at 6:30 p.m. Both matches will be available to stream on SEC Network +.
