Rebels Open the Season 4-0 for the First Time Since 2016
OXFORD, Miss.— On the first day of the Ole Miss Invitational, Ole Miss took care of business, taking down both UTSA and Coastal Carolina in a pair of 3-0 sweeps in front of a rambunctious Gillom Center crowd. The Rebels have started the 2021 season 4-0 for the first time since 2016 and are on the program's first four-match sweep streak since 2014.
MATCH ONE | Ole Miss 3, UTSA 0
In the first match of the day against UTSA, Samantha Schnitta led the Rebs with a total of 12 kills for her second double-digit kill match of the season. Anna Bair was a force on the outside, totaling 11 kills and adding five digs. On defense, Sam Burgio carried the squad with a total of 12 digs for her second double-digit match this year.
Ole Miss came out aggressive in the first set against UTSA as Payton Brgoch continued her strong play from the opening weekend, adding two quick early kills for Ole Miss to take a 7-4 lead. A 5-0 scoring run highlighted by sophomore hitting power in Schnitta and GG Carvacho put the Rebels up 14-9 before a UTSA comeback brought the set within two at 17-15. The Rebels strung together multiple 3-0 runs to maintain distance over the Roadrunners and pick up the first set 25-18.
The Rebels started off slow to begin the second set, trailing early at 10-5. Three straight points led by Bair sparked a Rebel run as Ole Miss pulled within two at 13-11, as she fired off two straight kills and added a block. The Rebs were resilient, coming back to retake the lead at 16-15 after trailing in a set for just the third time this season. From there there was no looking back as Ole Miss took the driver's seat, ultimately winning the set 25-20.
The Rebel groove continued into set three with a 7-1 run to start off, as Schnitta continued to dominate on the outside racking up double-digit kills with 11. UTSA battled to come within four at 10-6 but the Rebel offense was too potent, outhitting the Roadrunners .358 to .140. A 5-0 Ole Miss run capped off the set and a Burgio ace at match point won the set 25-14 and the match 3-0.
MATCH TWO | OLE MISS 3, COASTAL CAROLINA 0
In the nightcap, the two teams squared off in a back-and-forth affair with the third set taking some extra points. It was Sasha Ratliff with a tip kill through the middle to kick off a 4-0 Rebel run to lead 8-4. Bair continued where she left off after the first match, totaling three kills in the first set. The Rebels built their lead to as many as seven and were able to hold off a 4-0 Chanticleer run that brought the set to 22-18. Brgoch provided a rocket of a kill and a block, leading a 3-0 run to win the set 25-18.
The Rebel defense showed their prowess in set two, with Ratliff totaling two early block assists to go up 5-1. Multiple quick Ole Miss runs allowed the squad to extend its lead, going up by as many as nine at 16-7. Kylee McLaughlin continued to feed her hitters throughout the night, finishing with a total of 31 assists to control the Rebel offense. Ole Miss was able to block out short bursts of energy from Coastal Carolina with yet another one of 14 total blocks to hold off the Chanticleers 25-17.
The energy remained strong in the third set, despite a contentious challenge from the Chanticleers to push the Rebels past 30 points. Coastal took its largest lead of the match at 10-7, before an Ole Miss timeout provided a boost of momentum. Back-to-back kills from Bair gave the lead back to Ole Miss at 12-11. The Chanticleers were able to tie the set back up again at 17-all, in a set with a total of 20 ties. With the set tied up at 23 apiece, neither team would budge as CCU held off a match point at 24-23 to begin the back-and-forth battle for the final points. It was Ole Miss which had the final say as the Rebels held off two Coastal match points, with a Brgoch kill and a CCU attacking error delivered Ole Miss the set 31-29 and the match 3-0.
The Rebels are set to play their third and final match of the Ole Miss Invitational tomorrow against Northwestern State at 2 p.m. CT, the match will be available to watch on SEC Network +.
