Hartono Punches Ticket to Australian Open Main Draw

Ole Miss Alum Arianne Hartono Qualifies for First Major Championships Round of 128
MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA – 2018 NCAA Singles Champion Arianne Hartono earned three consecutive victories to qualify for her first career major main draw at the Australian Open on Friday.
Ole Miss tennis individual champion Hartono continues her rapid accession among the international tennis scene by becoming the first Rebel alum to reach a grand slam main draw since Devin Britton did on the men's side at the 2009 U.S. Open.
Hartono, ranked No. 191 in the WTA Singles Rankings has improved 209 positions since the final rankings of 2020 to entrench herself as a world top-200 player.
The Dutch professional willed her way through qualifying by earning three straight three-set victories. Hartono defeated Australian 17-year-old Talia Gibson on Monday, Belgian No. 177 Ysaline Bonaventure on Wednesday and German No. 130 Julie Niemeier on Friday. Neiemeier was the No. 17 overall seed in the qualifying draw.
Hartono will face American world No. 61 Amanda Anisimova in the opening round of the main draw on Sunday (time to be determined). 20-year-old Anisimova reached the fourth round of the Australian Open in 2019 and has a career-high ranking of No. 21.
