2009 NCAA CHAMPION
Seven years after becoming the youngest NCAA Singles Champion in Division I history, Ole Miss men’s tennis great Devin Britton joined the staff in June, 2016 as assistant coach.
A Jackson, Mississippi native, Britton assumed the position after serving the previous three years as a student assistant while completing his degree.
In 2021 the Rebels extended their streak of reaching the NCAA Team Championships to 27, reaching the Sweet 16 as the No. 15 overall seed. The Rebels also had three student-athletes compete in individiual championships. Tim Sandkaulen and Finn Reynolds received the No. 1 overall seed in doubles and were the No. 1 ranked team in the nation. Sandkaulen, Reynolds and Nikola Slavic all earned at-large bids into the NCAA Singles Championships. The three Rebels earned All-SEC honors. Ole Miss peaked in the overall team rankings at No. 9 in the country. Britton was voted as the ITA Southern Region Assistant Coach of the Year in 2021 for his efforts.
The 2020 season was shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite only competing in 14 matches, the Rebels went 10-4, defeated four top-30 opponents, had an ITA All-American doubles pairing, had the Southern Region Rookie of the Year, placed seven athletes on the ITA Scholar-Athlete list, and finished the season ranked No. 15 in the nation.
In 2019 the Rebels reached the NCAA Tournament for the 26th consecutive season. Britton assisted in guiding Tim Sandkaulen to reaching the second round of the NCAA Tournament singles competition.
In 2018 Britton and the Rebels reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season (Ole Miss streak of at least second round since 1995).
In his first year as a full time assistant, Britton helped the Rebels earn their 24th consecutive NCAA appearance and reach the second round for the 24th year in a row. Individual honors included three players among the top 25 final national rankings in singles and doubles and two All-SEC Team members. Off the court, the Rebels posted the highest GPA among all male sports at Ole Miss and placed seven of eight team members on the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
Britton has helped guide the Rebels to 26 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including reaching the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2018 after first-semester freshman Finn Reynolds pulled off the upset and clinched the victory over No. 4 Stanford. Since he joined the coaching staff in a full-time capacity, the Rebels have sent four individuals to NCAA Individual Championships and have claimed three consecutive ITA All-Academic Team awards. The squad has also claimed three straight Chancellor's Cups, awarded to the top GPA men's and women's team on campus.
Britton's tutelage helped Croatian doubles duo Filip Kraljevic and Zvonimir Babic take home the Southern Regional title in doubles in 2017 and coached stalwart Tim Sandkaulen to the prestigious John Breaux Cajun Tennis Classic title in fall 2019.
During his time as a student assistant, the Rebels continued their streak of NCAA appearances (23) and finished the 2015 season ranked No. 17 in the nation. Individual honors included three All-America selections, SEC Player of the Year and six All-SEC selections.
Prior to returning to Ole Miss to complete his degree, Britton spent five years on the professional circuit, where he won 12 ITF Futures and two ATP Challenger doubles titles, to go along with a singles title in the Sacramento Futures in June 2012.
Britton was ranked as high as No. 378 in the world in singles and No. 119 in doubles. He also received a wildcard into the 2009 United States Open as the reigning NCAA singles champion, where he faced then-No. 1 and 17-time grand slam champion Roger Federer in the first round.
After a stellar junior career, Britton joined the Rebels in the spring of 2009 and became the youngest player ever, and just the third freshman, to win the NCAA Singles title. He was the first freshman in the history of the program to earn All-America honors and finished that year ranked No. 19 in the nation in singles. Britton helped lead the Rebels to their fifth SEC Championship, their third SEC Tournament Championship, the NCAA Elite Eight and a final national ranking of No. 4.
Britton is excited to remain with the Rebels and help bring a national championship to the program as a coach.
“It’s an incredible opportunity to have been successful here as an athlete and now to be a coach here,” Britton said. “As a student assistant, I had the chance to work under two of the best coaches in Billy Chadwick and Toby Hansson, and I’ve learned a lot from them. I am excited for the future of the program.”
Britton graduated from Ole Miss in May of 2016 with a degree in managerial finance.
