Rebels to Compete in Tournament Opener Versus Michigan at Noon CT on Saturday
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss women's tennis (2-0, 0-0 SEC) travels to Atlanta to compete in ITA Kickoff Weekend matches hosted at Georgia Tech Saturday and Sunday. The Rebels face No. 14 Michigan (2-0, 0-0 Big 10) on Saturday at noon CT in the opening round.
ITA Kickoff Weekend serves as the preliminary qualifiers for the ITA National Indoor Tournament. The Rebels must win two matches in-a-row at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex to advance to this years' national event at the University of Wisconsin from Feb. 11 to Feb. 14. The Rebels are the No. 3 seed in the Georgia Tech region.
Back Inside
The Rebels return to compete in ITA Kickoff Weekend festivities for the second consecutive season. Ole Miss placed runners-up in Chapel Hill region in 2021, falling to No. 1 overall seed UNC in the second round. The Tar Heels went on to win the National Indoor title last year. The Rebels defeated Old Dominion in the opening round last year. The Monarchs are the No. 4 seed in the Georgia Tech draw this season and could potentially face the Rebels in the second round this go around.
A Sweep Start to the Season
Ole Miss begins the season 2-0 after earning two victories at-love versus the North Alabama Lions on Jan. 23. The Rebels won the first match, 7-0, and clinched the second, 4-0. The Rebels won both matches without dropping a single set in any match played on the day.
Scouting the Wolverines
Michigan also begins the season 2-0 after earning two sweep victories, 7-0, versus Western Michigan and Oakland on Jan. 22.
The Wolverines' roster features three players in the ITA Singles Rankings, No. 17 Kari Miller, No. 99 Julia Fliegner and No. 120 Nicole Hammond.
The Wolverines' strength in singles has earned them a 81-39 overall record in individual matches, but Michigan is sub .500 in doubles with a 24-26 record in 2021-22.
The Road to Madison
Next up for Ole Miss will be either No. 12 Georgia Tech or Old Dominion. If the Rebels win on Saturday, they will compete in the Championship Match on Sunday at Noon CT. A loss on Saturday equates to competing in the Consolation Match on Sunday at 9 a.m. CT.
The Yellow Jacket's roster features three ranked singles players, No. 38 Kylie Bilchev, No. 69 Ava Hrastar and No. 85 Carol Lee. Bilchev and Hrastar also rank No. 12 in the nation in doubles.
