Women’s Tennis Upsets No. 14 Michigan, 4-1, in ITA Kickoff Opener

Rebels to Compete in Regional Championship on Sunday at Noon CT
ATLANTA – Ole Miss women's tennis (3-0, 0-0 SEC) defeated No. 14 Michigan (2-1, 0-0 Big 10) 4-1 in the first round of ITA Kickoff Weekend competition on Saturday. The Rebels advance to face Old Dominion in the Regional Championship on Sunday at noon.
Ole Miss captured its moment facing its first ranked opponent of the season, No. 14 Michigan, by defeating the Wolverines at the Ken Beyers Tennis Complex on Saturday. The Rebels, the No. 2 seed in the Atlanta Region hosted by Georgia Tech, knocked-off Michigan, 4-1, to advance to the championship match on Sunday. If the Rebels win, they earn a spot in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
The Rebels willed their way to a grueling opening doubles point victory on top of the Wolverines. After splitting Courts Nos. 2-3, Court No. 1 served as the decider. Tiphanie Fiquet and Anaëlle Leclercq-Ficher outlasted Michigan's Jaedan Brown and Kari Miller in a 22-point tiebreak, 12-10, to claim the primary point for Ole Miss.
The Rebels carried the momentum from doubles directly into singles, winning three of four decided matches. No. 80 Sabina Machalova won first, defeating No. 120 Nicole Hammond 6-4, 6-3, to give the Rebels a 2-0. Ole Miss then took a commanding 3-0 lead when Reka Zadori took down No. 99 Julia Fliegner in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 Singles.
Brown then defeated Ludmila Kareisova in straight sets to scrape one point off the Rebels. Ole Miss led 3-1.
Krzyzak, a freshman competing in her first ITA Kickoff, clinched the match for Ole Miss by winning 7-5, 6-1 versus Michigan's Gala Mesochoritou. Krzyzak and Machalova earned victories in both singles and doubles versus the Wolverines.
Up Next: The Rebels take on Old Dominion, the No. 4 seed in Atlanta, tomorrow in the regional championship at noon CT. The Monarch's upset No. 12 Georgia Tech on their home court, 4-3, in the first match of the day on Saturday.
