Rebels Fall in Close Battle to Monarchs in ITA Kickoff Atlanta Regional Championship Match
ATLANTA – Ole Miss women's tennis (3-1, 0-0 SEC) suffered a 4-3 heartbreak defeat to Old Dominion (3-0, 0-0 C-USA) in the Atlanta ITA Kickoff Regional Final on Sunday.
The Ole Miss Rebels and Old Dominion Monarchs competed in a down-to-the-wire match at Georgia Tech's Ken Beyers Complex. Ole Miss and Old Dominion exchanged matches back-and-forth until the Monarchs prevailed with a 4-3 victory and earned a spot in the ITA National Indoor Championships. The Rebels came up one match, and just a couple games short.
Ole Miss and Old Dominion competed in a competitive doubles section to get the match going. The Monarch's fended-off the Rebels' No. 2 doubles, 6-1 to take a 1-0 lead. Old Dominion then clinched the doubles point, 2-0, by taking No. 3 doubles 7-5 in a close-call tiebreak. No. 1 doubles went unfinished with No. 3 Yulia Starodubtseva and Tatsiana Sasnouskaya (ODU) leading 6-5 versus Tiphanie Fiquet and Anaelle Leclercq-Ficher.
Reka Zadori leveled the match, 1-1, with a convincing 6-3, 6-3 victory versus Old Dominion's Sofia Johnson. Zadori won both her singles matches over the weekend in straight sets.
Old Dominion reclaimed the lead, 2-1, as No. 71 Yulia Starodubtseva was able to defeat the top Ole Miss singles player, No. 20 Tiphanie Fiquet, in three sets. The Monarch's extended their lead to 3-1 with another three-set win as No. 116 Tatsiana Sasnouskaya defeated No. 80 Sabina Machalova.
Rachel Krzyzak clawed one back for the Rebels by earning a 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-0 win at No. 6 singles versus Alesya Yakubovich. Old Dominion 3, Ole Miss 2. The match was then tied, 3-3, as a Marina Alcaide default led to a Leclercq-Ficher victory on Court No. 3.
Old Dominion's No. 106 Alexandra Viktorovich then defeated Ludmilla Kareisova 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3, to give the Monarch's the deciding win. Viktorovich withstood match-point by Kareisova in the second set to come back and earn the clinching win. Old Dominion 4, Ole Miss 3.
Up Next: The Rebels will next compete at Texas Tech on Feb. 19 in their first true road dual of the season.
