BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – All-American senior Mario Garcia Romo competed against the best milers in the world out in New York City, while back at the Indiana Relays the rest of the Ole Miss track & field teams put together a strong conclusion on an action-packed final day of competition on Saturday.
At the 114th running of the historic Millrose Games, Garcia Romo was the lone collegian in the prestigious Wanamaker Mile, an annual showcase of the best milers on the planet held at The Armory in New York City. He finished sixth overall at a time of 3:57.98, his second career sub-four that came close to his overall career-best 3:56.46 run on the oversized track at Vanderbilt last February.
Garcia Romo was consistent and calm amidst the sea of professional runners, beating out a group of eight that included four Olympians, his fellow countryman, Mariano Garcia (seventh, 3:59.61), and All-American Rebel legend, Craig Engels, who finished 10th at 4:01.30 in his first mile race since returning to the pro circuit after a stint as an Ole Miss volunteer coach this past fall.
Garcia Romo is the second Rebel in the last four years to run in the Wanamaker Mile, joining Robert Domanic's 10th-place finish from 2018.
Back at IU's Gladstein Fieldhouse, two Rebel women took hammers to the Ole Miss record book, etching their name atop the all-time lists following superb performances.
Junior Sintayehu Vissa continued her one-woman assault on the Rebel distance running records, claiming yet another to her name on Saturday following a thoroughly impressive 3K race. Just one week after demolishing her own school record in the mile by eight seconds at 4:32.70, Vissa won at 9:04.95 in her first collegiate 3K, dismantling teammate Anna Elkin's 2021 record of 9:17.19 set on Vanderbilt's oversized track by almost 13 seconds. Her winning time today is also the best ever by a Rebel on a non-oversized track, besting Mary Alex England's 9:30.82 at the 2017 Razorback Invitational by nearly 26 seconds. As of the national list entering Saturday, Vissa's time puts her at No. 7 in the NCAA this year.
In one short year since joining the Ole Miss track & field and cross country teams last January, Vissa has set school records indoors in the mile (4:32.70), 3K (9:04.95) and was part of the school record distance medley relay at the 2021 SEC Championships last February (11:04.27). Outdoors, she also owns the school record in the 1500-meter at 4:16.08, and in the 800-meter she ranks second outdoors (2:04.53) and fourth indoors (2:06.45).
Loral Winn also clocked a fast 3K time, finishing seventh at 9:24.70 in her first collegiate 3K try as well – the fifth-best time in school history and third-best on a non-oversized track.
The second school record of the day came courtesy of junior Lyndsey Reed, who continued her rapid ascent this indoor season with a spectacular performance in the pole vault. Reed entered with an overall career-best of 4.28m/14-00.50 from the 2021 outdoor season and ranked second all-time indoors at Ole Miss with her 4.25m/13-11.25 at Vanderbilt last week. On Saturday, though, Reed rode a gutsy performance to a new school record of 4.31m/14-01.75 – toppling Lindsey Murray's 2018 record of 4.30m/14-01.25.
Reed needed a second attempt for her first bar at 4.01m/13-01.75 and was clean over her next bar at 4.11m/13-05.75, but after a first attempt miss at 4.21m/13-09.75 she opted to pass over her next two bars to the would-be school record height of 4.31m/14-01.75. There, she wasted no time, clearing on her first attempt for the record and to solidify herself as the runner-up and top collegiate finisher in the event on Saturday. As of the national list entering Saturday, Reed's height ranks No. 5 in the NCAA and No. 2 in the SEC.
Reed was in a tight battle at the time with teammate Samara McConnell, who had soared clean over her first three bars before joining Reed in passing at 4.21m/13-09.75 following a first-attempt miss. McConnell, however, stayed back at the next bar of 4.26m/13-11.75, which she cleared on her second attempt to set a new overall career-best – the third-best height in Ole Miss history now behind Reed and Murray.
Back on the track, Ole Miss received a strong open from senior transfer Lydia van Dijk in the mile. She finished fourth overall at a six-second PR of 4:44.42, the fourth-best mile time in school history.
Over in the men's 3K, newcomer Cruz Culpepper opened some eyes in his first career 3K race, finishing seventh overall from the second heat at 7:56.93. That time ranks as the sixth-best in Ole Miss history, and it made Culpepper just the seventh Rebel to ever break eight minutes in the 3K.
He wouldn't be alone for long, though, as two more Rebels – Cole Bullock (10th, 7:58.93) and Shane Bracken (12th, 7:59.43) joined him as the eighth and ninth Rebels to join the sub-eight club with the eighth and ninth fastest times in Ole Miss history, respectively. Dereck Elkins finished 15th at a 24-second PR of 8:07.88 that ranks 13th-best on the all-time list.
In the 60-meter hurdles final, newcomer Spencer Brown claimed victory for Ole Miss at a career-best 7.99 seconds, which makes him just the eighth Rebel to ever eclipse eight seconds in the event. Senior Kenney Broadnax was right behind him as the runner-up at 8.02 seconds.
Saturday also saw the conclusion of both the men's and women's multi events. In the women's pentathlon, Sara Van Aken finished fourth overall at a career-best 3,754 points – the sixth-best total in program history and the best by a Rebel since 2019. Van Aken did so after a win in the high jump (1.73m/5-08.00), a runner-up finish in the long jump (5.56m/18-03.00) and two PRs in the shot put (fifth, 11.16m/36-07.50) and 800-meter (fifth, 2:30.57). Meg Goebel also set a career-best at 3,182 points in sixth place, the 14th-best on the Ole Miss all-time list after notching three PRs in the 60-meter hurdles (second, 8.90), shot put (eighth, 8.72m/28-07.50) and long jump (sixth, 5.12m/16-09.75).
After two grueling days in the men's heptathlon, the Rebel trio of Pierce Genereux (seventh, 4,386), Peyton Lowery (ninth, 4,298) and Luke Etherton (10th, 3,908; PR) each got their first multi of the season under their belts.
Ole Miss track & field now has a week off before splitting squad for the weekend of February 11-12, with the Rebels going back to Vanderbilt for the Music City Challenge in addition to the Tyson Invitational at Arkansas.
