Rifle Falls To WVU In Season Opener

Rebels Turn In 4,696 Team Score
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Opening the season on the road against GARC foe West Virginia, Ole Miss rifle came up short, firing a 4696 team score Saturday afternoon.
The Rebels (0-1, 0-1 GARC) turned in a solid performance in their first match of the season, despite the result. Senior Kristen Derting led the way, firing the fifth-best individual score in the match behind four WVU counters. Ole Miss posted a 2326 mark in air rifle, followed by a 2370 in air rifle.
Leading the way in smallbore was freshman Julianna Hays. The Maplewood, Minnesota, native finished with an impressive 585. Derting posted the next best score, a 583, highlighted by a perfect prone score. Junior Lea Horvath contributed a 582 to the team score, and Claire O'Neel wrapped up the scoring for the counters with a 576.
Ole Miss' upperclassmen set the tone in air rifle, firing the team's top three scores. Derting posted a strong 595, followed closely by Horvath, just a point behind her. O'Neel was the third Rebel to eclipse 590, doing so with a 592. Sophomore air rifle specialist, Martina Gratz, added a 589.
Overall, Hays finished with a strong 1,173 aggregate score and freshman teammate Emma Pereira turned in a 1,164 in their collegiate debuts.
West Virginia led the Rebels for the majority of the match as it fired a team score of 4,723 (2,340 in smallbore and 2,383 in air rifle). Transfer Mary Tucker paced the field in both disciplines as she posted the second-best score in the NCAA this season with a 1,193.
