HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Ole Miss cross country looks to punch its ticket to the national meet when the Rebel men's and women's squads toe the line at the NCAA South Regional, held at North Alabama this Friday morning.
The key prize for teams running in the nine NCAA Regional meets across the United States on Friday will be the top-two automatic qualifier spots to the national championship, which this year will be hosted at Oklahoma State. The next four individual finishers not attached to either of those two qualifying teams also earn trips to the national meet as an individual runner.
An additional 13 at-large teams and a variable number of additional individuals are chosen through a national selection process. The NCAA Selection Show is set for Sat., Nov. 12 at 4 p.m. CT on NCAA.com. The top-25 finishers at each regional earn All-Region honors.
The Ole Miss men are coming off their best team performance of the season at the SEC Championships in Oxford back on Oct. 28, finishing fourth in the closest team race among four teams in the history of the conference. Senior Anthony Camerieri led the Rebels for the fourth consecutive meet, earning First-Team All-SEC honors in sixth place at a 12-second 8K PR of 23:07.40. While at Miami (Ohio), Camerieri was twice the top finisher for his team at the Great Lakes regional, led by a 35th-place finish in 2021.
Fellow All-SEC members in action Friday include Second-Team members Chris Maxon and Cole Bullock. Bullock is one of three returning Rebel men to earn NCAA All-South Region last year, alongside two-time honoree Ben Savino and 2021 top finisher Dereck Elkins, who finished 11th overall to help lead the Rebel men to the South Region team title. Bullock – a three-time All-SEC member – was an All-American for Ole Miss in 2020.
Other Rebel men lacing up on Friday include Shane Bracken, Aiden Britt, Dalton Hengst, Chase Rose and Gabe Scales.
The Ole Miss women are also coming off its best team performance of 2022 at the SEC Championships, where the Rebels took third place for their seventh consecutive top-three conference finish (after having never done so prior to 2016).
Senior and returning NCAA All-South Region runner Ryann Helmers was stellar for Ole Miss again, leading the Rebels for her fourth straight meet at a monster 40-second 6K PR of 19:37.15 – the fastest cross country 6K time by a Rebel woman in available records. This season, Helmers owns an average finish of 10.5, and last year in Huntsville she was 15th-place finisher for Ole Miss – one of five Rebel women scorers all within the top-20.
Also returning is fellow All-Region honoree and senior Kristel van den Berg, who finished 19th for the Rebels in 2021 at a 6K PR of 20:25.30. Second-Team All-SEC runner Loral Winn was 39th for the Rebels a year ago, and Skylar Boogerd was 42nd, but is accustomed to running fast in Huntsville, as she won the 2021 North Alabama Showcase at a blistering 5K best of 16:28.1.
EKU transfer Laura Taborda holds some significant regional experience as well, after having finished NCAA All-Southeast Region in 2021 following a 21st-place finish last season.
Other Rebel women in competition on Friday include Sophie Baumann, Madison Hulsey, Hannah Ielfield, Jocelyn Long, Frances Luna and Sarah Schiffmann.
The women's 6K race will begin at 8:30 a.m. CT, with the men's 10K to follow at 9:30 a.m. CT.
