Rebels Host GARC Foe Memphis Saturday
OXFORD, Miss. – After firing the top two scores in program history two weekends ago, No. 5 Ole Miss rifle returns home to close out its regular season against Memphis Saturday morning.
Their last time out, the Rebels were dominant in both disciplines. Ole Miss fired its top smallbore team score of the season and shattered the air rifle program record with a 2388. Overall, it translated into the top two scores in school history. Heading into the final weekend of the regular season, the Rebels are 8-3 overall (6-1 GARC) and sit comfortably in fifth in the NCAA Team Selection standings with a 4727.33 average.
As of late, everything has been clicking for the Rebels. Sophomore Lea Horvath fired the second perfect air rifle score of her career, becoming one of four athletes to accomplish the feat multiple times in their career. She ranks fourth nationally with an aggregate average of 1186.5. Seniors Abby Buesseler and Jillian Zakrzeski are also coming off their biggest matches of the season. Buesseler fired back-to-back aggregate scores of 1180 or better, while Zakrzeski had a career weekend, posting an 1188.
The junior duo of Kristen Derting and Claire O'Neel has been a key for the Rebels this season. Derting has shot extremely well down the stretch, and O'Neel has been one of Ole Miss' breakout performers this season. Also factoring into the mix has been Martina Gratz. The air rifle specialist has eclipsed the 590 mark in eight of her last nine matches.
Smallbore action is set to begin at 9 a.m. CT on Saturday. All matches are open to the public, and fans who cannot attend can follow along on social media for live updates throughout the match.
