Rebels Wrap Up Regular Season as Co-Champs for the Second Straight Season
OXFORD, Miss. – No. 5 Ole Miss rifle closed out its regular season at home, defeating Memphis 4723-4646, Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Rebels improve to 9-3 overall and clinched a share of the GARC regular-season championship for the second straight year.
With a 6-1 record in conference matches, the Rebels once again found themselves in a three-way tie for the GARC crown with West Virginia and Kentucky. As a result, Ole Miss earned a share of the regular season title.
Lea Horvath paced the field as five of the top six individuals in the match were Rebels. She turned in an 1186 aggregate score, while senior Abby Buesseler fired an 1178, good for second among the field of 16.
Kristen Derting led the way through smallbore, firing a strong 589. She was followed by Buesseler and Horvath, who posted identical scores of 587. Jillian Zakrzeski closed out the scoring for the Rebels with a 579 in the final counter position. As a team, Ole Miss finished with a team score of 2342 in the discipline.
In air rifle, Horvath followed up her perfect outing from the last match with a 599. The sophomore was just one-shot shy of perfection, hitting a 9 in her first series. She was followed by Claire O'Neel, who turned in an impressive 597 and Zakrzeski with a 594. Buesseler posted a 591, helping Ole Miss eclipse the 2380 mark as a team for the third consecutive match.
Memphis finished with a team score of 4646 (2299 in smallbore and 2347 in air rifle). Angeline Henry led the Tigers with an aggregate score of 1176, grabbing third overall in the match.
Ole Miss is back in action next weekend when it hosts its NCAA Qualifier match against Jacksonville State. The match will also serve as senior day for the Rebels' four seniors.
