Women’s Track & Field Ties Record at No. 7 in Week Five USTFCCCA Rankings

Best Indoor Ranking for Rebel Women Since 2008

NEW ORLEANS – Ole Miss women's track & field tied an indoor program record after rising to No. 7 in the Week Five USTFCCCA National Rating Index released on Monday afternoon. The Rebel men, meanwhile, fell just one spot to No. 17 as the Rebel squads head into the 2022 SEC Indoor Championships this weekend at Texas A&M.

This marks just the ninth time both Rebel units have been nationally ranked at the same time indoors, with all nine instances coming within the past two seasons since first occurring in Week Two of the 2021 indoor campaign.

The No. 7 slot for the Ole Miss women ties for the best in program history with a No. 7 ranking in Week One of the 2008 season, and it is now the second-best in the combined history of the men's and women's program indoors behind a No. 6 men's ranking in Week Two of the 2021 season.

This is the 10th top-10 appearance for the Rebel women indoors and their fourth in five chances this season, as well as the 41st total appearance in the top-25 for Ole Miss in the women's indoor rankings since they began in 2008. Additionally, this is the Rebel women's 18th appearance in the last 19 releases after being ranked for the entirety of the 2020 and 2021 indoor regular seasons. Under seventh-year head coach Connie Price-Smith, Ole Miss has notched 33 of those 41 total appearances.

For the No. 17 Rebel men, this is their third appearance this season and their 39th time overall.

Ole Miss is led by a powerful weight throw squad on the women's side, with the trio of Bowerman Award Watch List member Shey Taiwo (25.19m/82-07.75; No. 1, 25.95 points), Jasmine Mitchell (23.63m/77-6; No. 2, 20.77 points) and Jalani Davis (22.96m/75-4; No. 4, 15.52 points) combining for 62.24 of the 102.23 points in the Week Five index.

The Rebel women also got a big boost this past week from two big performances at last-chance meets at Notre Dame and Arkansas. At the Alex Wilson Invitational, the Ole Miss women's distance medley relay of Anna Elkin, Jayda Eckford, Loral Winn and Sintayehu Vissa smashed the Ole Miss record at their winning time of 10:57.76 (No. 4, 15.46 points). At the Arkansas Qualifier, Lyndsey Reed again moved the bar up on her own school record for the third straight meet, winning amidst a stacked field at 4.41m/14-05.50 (No. 6, 11.15 points).

Other Rebel women contributing include Sintayehu Vissa in both the mile (No. 6, 4:32.70; 11.27 points) and 3K (No. 25, 9:04.95; 0.35 points), Samara McConnell in the pole vault (No. 16, 4.34m/14-02.75; 1.55 points) and Jalani Davis in the shot put (No. 25, 16.70m/54-09.50; 0.20 points).

On the men's side, the Rebel men are led by All-American senior Mario Garcia Romo, whose mile school record 3:53.36 ranks second in the nation and is worth 19.44 points in the Week Five index. Other Rebel men's milers contributing are James Young (No. 9, 3:55.20; 7.79 points) and Shane Bracken (No. 36, 3:57.57; 0.10 points). Garcia Romo also is contributing 0.75 points with his school record No. 23 time in the 3K of 7:47.56.

The Ole Miss men also received a big boost this week from their DMR run at Notre Dame. The quartet of John Rivera Jr., Jacob Lough, Tiarnan Crorken and Mario Garcia Romo narrowly finished second and ran the sixth-fastest all-conditions time in NCAA history at 9:21.94 (No. 3, 17.81 points) – the second-best time in Ole Miss history.

Additionally, Ole Miss is receiving a sum of 9.34 points from three 800-meter runners: John Rivera Jr. (No. 10, 1:47.48; 6.78 points), Tiarnan Crorken (No. 15, 1:47.68; 2.13 points) and Baylor Franklin (No. 26, 1:48.14; 0.43 points).

Also scoring in Week Five is All-American senior Allen Gordon at his long jump season best of 7.65m/25-01.25 (No. 31, 0.04 points).

The USTFCCCA's National Rating Index is a computer rating system that uses an algorithm that emphasizes individual performances, assigning a point value to each individual mark that contributes to a team total to assess its national ranking.

This week, Ole Miss track & field is off to 2022 SEC Indoor Championships, held at Texas A&M on Feb. 25-26.
