Rebels Begin Postseason Action at Conference Championship
West Point, N.Y. – After finishing the regular season as GARC Co-Champions for the second straight year, Ole Miss rifle looks to make a splash at the conference championship match on February 25th and 26th.
The Rebels put together another impressive campaign during the 2021-22 season, finishing 10-3 overall with a 7-1 mark in conference matches. As a team, Ole Miss fired five of the top nine scores in program history and topped the 4700 mark 11 times.
Last year's CRCA Rookie of the Year and third place individual in both smallbore and air rifle, Lea Horvath, hasn't slowed down in her sophomore campaign. The Komárom, Hungary, native ranks fourth in the nation with an average aggregate score of 1186.3. Junior Claire O'Neel has transformed into one of the top air rifle performers in the country this season, ranking eighth with a 595.2 average.
Kristen Derting has also been sharp for the Rebels, posting the 16th best smallbore average in the NCAA. Rounding out the counters are a pair of seniors, Abby Buesseler and Jillian Zakrzeski. The duo was a part of last season's squad that finished third at NCAAs and are looking for a storybook ending to their Ole Miss careers.
In their last trip to West Point a month ago, the Rebels fired a school record 4737 against Army and followed it up with a 4735 against John Jay College the next day. It was also in that match that Horvath posted her second career perfect air rifle score.
Teams will shoot smallbore on Friday and air rifle on Saturday, with three relays of each discipline followed by a final for the top eight individuals. Action begins at 7 a.m. CT on both days.
