Rebels Will Start Tuesday’s Final Round with Suber and Vongchaisit in Top 20
CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico – The Ole Miss men's golf team capped off the second round of competition at the Cabo Collegiate by logging a team score of 279 (-5) on the day, putting the Rebels at 553 (-10) on the week and into a tie for third heading into the final round from Mexico on Tuesday.
Ranking second in the field in par-4 scoring (-4) as a team, the Rebels sit tied with the Arkansas Razorbacks in third place entering the final day of competition. The Rebels have logged 40 total birdies in Mexico so far, along with three total eagles on the week, ranking behind only Baylor (4) for most eagles in the tournament.
"I was very impressed with what I saw out of our guys today," said head coach Chris Malloy. "We got off to a slow start and really held it together and finished strong. We have to eliminate the amount of three putts that we have had the first two days and we will be just fine. We'll be ready to go tomorrow."
Pacing the Rebels after logging his second-consecutive round in the 60s in Cabo San Lucas was senior Jackson Suber, whose five-birdie round of 68 (-3) on day two helped guide him into a tie for 12th. Now five-under on the week, Suber currently leads the Rebels in total birdies with 10 on the tournament, as well as having an eagle during Sunday's opening round.
Alongside Suber in the top 20 sits Sarut Vongchaisit, as the Bangkok, Thailand, native logged back-to-back rounds in the 60s as well to have him enter round three in a tie for 17th. Vongchaisit logged a round of 69 (-2), mirroring his score from Sunday, while also currently ranking second in the field in par-5 scoring (-7) on the week.
Following a career-low opening round of 68 (-3) on Sunday, redshirt-freshman Kye Meeks was able to follow his strong performance from a day prior with a round of 72 (+1) to settle into a tie for 27th overall. Seeking his first collegiate top 20 finish with the Rebels, Meeks currently ranks second for Ole Miss golfers in par-4 scoring (-3) and in total birdies (9) on the week.
Evan Brown's Monday round in Mexico concluded with the graduate transfer landing a 75 (+4), putting his two-day total at 143 (+1). Brown enters the third round of play tied for 41st.
Bouncing back from his outing on Sunday, Brett Schell would end his second day at the Cabo Collegiate with a 70 (-1), logging four birdies as well as the team's third eagle of the tournament on Hole 16.
Tied at the top of the team leaderboard at 18-under are both Florida State and Oklahoma State with both teams ahead of the Rebels by just three strokes entering day three.
The third and final round of the Cabo Collegiate is set to kick off Tuesday morning, with the Rebels teeing off at 9:00 a.m. CT with the rest of the field on a shotgun start.
