Rebels Sweep Regular Season Series Versus Crimson Tide
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – No. 20 Ole Miss men's tennis (11-4, 1-1 SEC) earned its first victory in SEC play, defeating Alabama (4-10, 0-2 SEC), 6-1, on Friday evening.
The Rebels earned a start to finish victory over the Crimson Tide on the road at the University of Alabama Tennis Stadium. The match was moved up in time by two hours to account for predicted adverse weather conditions on Friday night. Ole Miss earned its 11th regular season victory of the 2022 dual season, surpassing its 2021 regular season total of 10.
Ole Miss swept doubles, earning the primary decision point by taking Courts Nos. 2 and 3. Nikola Slavic and John Hallquist Lithén won first, defeating Patrick Kaukovalta and Juan Martin, 6-3, at No. 3 Doubles. Slavic and Lithén improved to 5-2 when paired together this season (all in dual competition). Jan Soren Hain and Simon Junk then clinched doubles on Court No. 2 by defeating Enzo Aguiard and Joaoa Ferreira in a tiebreak. No. 2 Finn Reynolds and Lukas Engelhardt had their match go unfinished, in the tiebreak, versus No. 28 Filip Planinsek and German Samofolov.
The Rebels rode the momentum from doubles into singles, winning five of six one-on-one matches. Ole Miss played with a clutch edge over their opponents, winning five of seven sets to go to tiebreaks (six of eight including doubles). Engelhardt won first, defeating Kaukovalta 6-4, 6-4. Lithén then defeated Samofalov in straight sets to extend the Rebels' lead to 3-0. The Crimson Tide took one back, as Juan Martin fended off Simon Junk on Court No. 5. Finn Reynolds clinched the match moments later, defeating Aguiard 7-6, 6-4, at No. 2 Singles.
Ole Miss and Alabama played out the two remaining matches. Both ranked Ole Miss players, No. 18 Nikola Slavic and No. 104 Jan Soren Hain, earned individual victories to result in a 6-1 win for the Rebels on the road.
