Rebels Drop SEC Opener In Close Affair

3/18/2022 | Softball

Early Errors Costly as Ole Miss Can’t Complete Comeback

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Costly errors came back to haunt Ole Miss as the Rebels dropped an 8-9 shootout to Mississippi State in their SEC opener Friday night at Nusz Park.

Despite scoring seven unanswered to storm back into the ballgame, Ole Miss (21-5, 0-1 SEC) couldn't complete a second comeback against Mississippi State (17-10, 2-2 SEC). Five Rebels tallied multiple hits, including Bre Roper, who launched her first home run of the season.

The Bulldogs took advantage of two early errors to extend innings, scoring six unearned runs in the first two innings. Ole Miss got one back in the top of the second and began to claw away at the lead. Sydney Gutierrez singled and scored on a single from Angelina DeLeon that was misplayed and rolled all the way to the wall.

Down 6-1 heading into the third, the Rebels worked their way back into the ballgame with a three-run inning. Nyomi Jones and Tate Whitley led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Mississippi State managed to get two outs, but now before Abbey Latham could drop an RBI single in the gap. She came around to score with Whitley as Gutierrez knocked in the pair with her second hit of the night, pulling the Rebels within two.

Continuing to battle, Ole Miss had another big inning, scoring four in the fourth to take the lead. A pair of infield singles from DeLeon and Jones created the perfect opportunity with the top of the order coming to the plate. Whitley ripped an RBI single back up the middle to cut the lead to one, and Roper crushed her first home run as a Rebel to straight-away center to put Ole Miss up 8-6.

With the lead, Anna Borgen took over in the circle. After retiring the first two batters she faced, Mississippi State notched three consecutive hits to get back within one. The following inning, the Bulldogs continued to string together hits to retake the lead before Brooke Vestal could shut things down.

An inning-ending double play stalled the Rebels' opportunity in the sixth, and Mississippi State hung on to record the final three outs to take game one of the series.

The Rebels look to bounce back against the Bulldogs Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. CT. The game will be available on national TV on SEC Network.
