Borgen Picks up Second SEC Victory of the Weekend
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss Softball capped off its weekend with a dominant 5-1 victory over No. 19 Missouri Sunday afternoon to sweep the nationally-ranked Tigers at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
With the sweep, Ole Miss (24-7, 3-3 SEC) remains undefeated at home this season. It also marks its first sweep against a ranked opponent since taking three games from No. 25 UCF in Oxford last season.
Anna Borgen was dominant in the circle, picking up her second victory over the Tigers on the weekend. Abbey Latham went 2-for-2 and drove in a pair of runs on the afternoon. Tate Whitley also notched two hits, and Bre Roper scored three of the Rebels' five runs.
The Rebels wasted no time, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Whitley and Roper led off the game with back-to-back singles to put two on with no outs. After Paige Smith grounded into a fielders' choice, the runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch, and Latham drove in the game's first run with an RBI single to no man's land in left.
Ole Miss broke the game open in the third, scoring three runs on wild pitches and a pair of errors. Once again Whitley and Roper reached base to lead off the inning, and Smith loaded the bases with an infield single. With the Rebels threatening, the Tiger pitcher missed her mark resulting in a pair of runs crossing the plate. Following a pair of walks to reload the bases, Missouri went to the bullpen and made a pitching change. The Rebels got one more run as Smith sprinted home on the second wild pitch of the inning to make it a 4-0 game.
Latham tacked on a run in the fourth with her 141st career RBI, moving her into second on the all-time Ole Miss record book. She dropped a single into the gap in right-center to bring Roper home.
Borgen cruised through the first five innings, allowing only two hits and striking out a pair. Diederich entered the game to start the sixth inning and struck out two batters to leave runners on the corners. Needing just three more outs, she retired the first two batters in the seventh before a solo home run took away the shutout.
