Machalova Defeats ITA No. 2, Women’s Tennis Falls 5-2 at No. 42 South Carolina

No. 69 Sabina Machalova Earns Signature Victory in Rebels’ Loss
OXFORD, Miss. – No. 44 Ole Miss Women's Tennis (8-8, 2-6 SEC) was unable to overcome its road challenges, falling to No. 42 South Carolina (10-7, 5-3 SEC), 5-2, despite a strong finish to the match on Sunday.
Ole Miss women's tennis fell to .500 on the season after coming up short on the road at the Carolina Tennis Stadium. The ITA No. 44 Rebels were able to earn individual victories at No. 1 and No. 6 singles versus South Carolina, but lost 5-2 to the No. 42 Gamecocks. The Rebels are now 0-5 on the road this season.
The Gamecocks got ahead early, sweeping doubles by a wide margin. South Carolina took No. 2 doubles first, 6-1, prior to taking No. 1 doubles, 6-0. Court No. 3 went unfinished with the Rebels slightly trailing 4-3.
South Carolina transitioned momentum from doubles into singles, winning all six first sets. The Rebels dropped No. 2, No. 5 and No. 4 singles in succession to cede the match to the Gamecocks. South Caroline clinched the win at 4-0. The final three matches were played out in full.
Lillian Gabrielsen put the Rebels on the board, coming back to defeat Ana Cruz 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 Singles. Gabrielsen improved to 12-8 overall this season including a 7-3 record in duals.
No. 69 Sabina Machalova then earned the highest-ranked win of her collegiate career, taking down No. 2 Sarah Hamner 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-4. Machalova improved to 18-10 overall in 2021-22 and has defeated higher-ranked opponents in three of the last four matches. Machalova earned her first-career top-10 singles victory by defeating Hamner. The Rebels trailed 4-2.
South Carolina won No. 3 singles in three sets to end the match with a 5-2 defeat over the Rebels. The Rebels have lost 10 straight matches versus the Gamecocks dating back to 2013.
Up Next: The Rebels return home for one match next weekend versus rival Missisippi State at 1 p.m. CT on Sunday April 3.
