Men’s Golf Heads into Final Day in Charleston in the Title Hunt

Pair of 68 (-4) Scorecards from Meeks, Vongchaisit Help Rebels Maintain Their Pace

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Carrying its strong momentum from day one, the Ole Miss men's golf team went into Monday's second round day of play at the Hootie at Bulls Bay tournament in Charleston, South Carolina looking to continue its hot streak, where the Rebels rose to the occasion to card a round of 279 (-9) as a team to sit tied for second overall on the team leaderboard.

The Rebels have logged a total of 33 birdies over the tournament's opening two rounds, as well as leading the field in total eagles with six so far on the week. Par- 4 scoring has also proven to be a strong suit for the Rebels, as Ole Miss currently ranks second in the field in the category at five-under par as a team.

"We got off to another great start today," said head coach Chris Malloy. "Unfortunately, we really hurt ourselves coming down the stretch with some really unforced errors and big numbers. If we are going to make a serious run at this thing, we need to do a much better job at doing the simple things better. I know these guys are eager to get back on the golf course and compete."

Still leading the way for the Rebels at the end of day two, was Brett Schell, who followed up his blazing opening round of 66 (-6) on Sunday with a 72 (E) on Monday to now sit tied for ninth heading into the final day of competition. Schell currently ranks third in the field in par-4 scoring (-4), while also scoring five-under on par 5s in Charleston.

Slotting right behind Schell for the second-consecutive day in a tie for 13th is Evan Brown, as Brown's round of 72 (E) on Monday saw the graduate transfer log a total of five birdies, four of which would come in his front nine on the day. Brown would finish his front nine at red-hot three-under, picking up right where he had left off on Sunday, before a late triple bogey on Hole 17 saw him shoot for par on the day.

Jackson Suber marks the only Rebel to now have back-to-back rounds below par in Charleston this weekend, as the senior would close out play on Monday with a 71 (-1), putting his two-day total at 141 (-3) and the Tampa, Florida, native into a tie for 27th place. Suber's round would consist of six total birdies, tying for the second-most of any golfer on the day. He currently sits at a team-high 10 birdies so far on the week.

Logging three birdies, as well as an eagle, in just his first six holes of the day, redshirt-freshman Kye Meeks leapt up the leaderboard for the Rebels and into a tie for 35th overall after matching his career-low 18-hole total of 68 (-4) on the day. Meeks saw a nearly blemish-free round on the day, shooting par or better on his first 17 holes of the day before logging his first and only bogey on No. 18 to close out his new personal-best round.

Also finishing the day with a scorecard showing a 68 (-4) and tying for 35th on the individual leaderboard was senior Sarut Vongchaisit, as Vongchaisit took a page out of teammate Schell's book by sinking two eagles in his front nine, with the eagles coming on Holes 4 and 6, both par 5s. Both Vongchaisit and Schell, who now each have two eagles apiece on the week, are tied atop the field for most eagles by an individual at Bulls Bay.

Remaining atop the team leaderboard are the South Carolina Gamecocks, as they now hold a 10-stroke lead over the Rebels, who are currently tied with NC State and Missouri in the No. 2 position.

The final round of the Hootie at Bulls Bay is set to tee off Tuesday beginning at 8:39 a.m. CT with the Rebels teeing off on Hole 1.
