No. 98 Lithén Earns Singles Win at No. 3 Position
OXFORD, Miss. – No. 14 Ole Miss men's tennis (10-4, 0-1 SEC) fell 6-1 to No. 2 Tennessee (14-2, 2-0 SEC) at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center on Sunday.
The Ole Miss Rebels fought hard at home in front of a stellar Sunday crowd, but were unable to overcome the hump versus No. 2 Tennessee, falling 6-1 at home in the SEC season opener. The Rebels record dropped to 10-4 overall this season, with all four defeats suffered against top-11 opponents (four in the top four).
Tennessee came back to take the opening doubles point versus the Rebels. 2021 NCAA Doubles Champions No. 57 Adam Walton and Pat Harper won first, taking No. 2 Doubles 6-2 versus Jan Soren Hain and Simon Junk. Nikola Slavic and John Hallquist Lithén led 5-3 at No. 3 doubles; but were unable to win any more games and fell 7-5 to Johannus Monday and Mark Wallner. The top-10 matchup of No. 6 Lukas Engelhardt and Finn Reynolds versus No. 9 Shunsuke Mitsui and Emile Hudd went unfinished with the Rebels ahead 5-4. The Volunteers took a 1-0 match lead.
The Volunteers won five of six singles matches on the Rebels' home court. Tennessee won in straight sets on Court No. 5 and then No. 4 to take a 3-0 match lead. Pat Harper then sealed the victory for Tennessee by defeating Jan Soren Hain in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The Rebels and Volunteers played out the final three matches after Tennessee clinched the win. No. 98 Lithén was the only Ole Miss player to win a match on Sunday, defeating Angel Diaz 6-4, 5-7, 6-0 at the No. 3 Singles position. Tiebreaks proved crucial to match outcomes as Tennessee won all four sets to go to 6-6. The match lasted for 3:21.
Up Next: The Rebels travel on the road next weekend to compete at Alabama on Friday, Mar. 11 and at LSU on Sunday, Mar. 13.
