Softball’s Comeback Falls Short

No. 9 Arkansas Evens the Series
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss was unable to complete its late-game comeback against No. 9 Arkansas, falling 6-3 Saturday afternoon at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
Both teams joined the SEC, wearing teal uniforms to support awareness for ovarian cancer and in honor of former Mississippi State player Alex Wilcox, who heroically fought the deadly disease until her passing in 2018.
After being shut out for only the second time all season in game one, the Razorback came out swinging, jumping out to an early two-run lead in the opening frame. They continued to attack early, hitting two home runs in the second to quickly put the Rebels in a 6-0 deficit.
Vestal took over in the circle and was able to get the final out and strand a pair to take Ole Miss to the bottom half of the inning, but it was once again unable to do anything with the leadoff runner on. Vestal settled in nicely and worked three clean innings to quiet the Arkansas offense.
Momentum began to turn for the Rebels in the fourth when Latham started off the inning, taking a pitch off her forearm. With one out, Gutierrez ripped a triple down the line that rolled all the way to the wall past the right fielder.
Ole Miss added two more to cut the lead in half in the fifth inning. Tate Whitley reached on a fielding error, and Bre Roper launched her third home run of the season over the wall in right to pull the Rebels within three.
Heading into the bottom of the seventh, Nyomi Jones singled to the shortstop with one out, and Roper followed, lacing a ball through the right side to bring the tying run to the plate, but Ole Miss was unable to complete the comeback.
The Rebels and Razorbacks will square off tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT with the series on the line.
