Cross Country, Track & Field's Ben Savino Named a Walter Byers Scholarship Finalist

Savino the Second Finalist in Ole Miss History

INDIANAPOLIS – Following an outstanding athletic and academic career at Ole Miss, cross country & track redshirt senior Ben Savino has been named a finalist for the prestigious Walter Byers Scholarship by the NCAA. Savino is the second finalist in school history, alongside Rhodes Scholar Calvin Thigpen, also of Ole Miss track & field.
 
The Cary, North Carolina, native earned his undergraduate degree in 2021 in mechanical engineering and is currently pursuing his PhD in engineering science.
 
Throughout his time at Ole Miss, Savino helped lead the Rebel men to their first two SEC cross country titles in overall program history in 2018 and 2019, while also being named to the NCAA All-South Region team twice. Savino was also recognized for his accolades in the classroom, earning USTFCCCA All-Academic honors three times.
 
On the track, Savino owns the Ole Miss 10th all-time best mark indoors in the 5K at 14:09.92 and 11th all-time best mark outdoors in the 10K at 30:35.07. At the 2021 SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Savino contributed to the Rebel point total with an 8th place finish in the 5K.
 
Established by the NCAA in 1998, the Walter Byers Scholarship is used to recognize the contributions of the former executive director through encouraging excellence in academic performance by student-athletes. The scholarship is awarded annually to one male and one female student athlete in recognition of outstanding academic achievement and potential for success in graduate study.
