Rebels Pick Up Ranked Road Win at Pete Taylor Park
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Ole Miss picked up a big non-conference win on Wednesday night, taking down No. 11 Southern Miss 4-1 at Pete Taylor Park. It is the second ranked win of the season for the Rebels.
Drew McDaniel earned the win, delivering five innings with one run allowed on four hits, matching his season-high with eight strikeouts. Jackson Kimbrell, Josh Mallitz and Brandon Johnson teamed up to shutout the Golden Eagles the rest of the way. Johnson earned his seventh save of the season.
Southern Miss took an early lead in the second, jumping ahead 1-0 on Christopher Sargent's towering home run to left field.
Having allowed Golden Eagle starter Matt Adams to face the minimum through three, Ole Miss responded in the fourth. After Jacob Gonzalez dropped a 1-out single into center, Kevin Graham and Kemp Alderman went-back-to-back over the left and right field fences, respectively, to give the Rebels a 3-1 lead.
McDaniel recorded back-to-back strikeouts in the home half but then ran into some trouble, issuing a pair of walks and an HBP to load the bases. However, the junior escaped the jam, inducing a weak fly ball to Graham in left to retire the side.
Tim Elko tacked on another run in the fifth, spanking an RBI single the other way to bring home Justin Bench, who was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a wild pitch and fielder's choice.
From there, the bullpen did the rest to give Ole Miss a quality win away from home to open up its five-game road swing.
Ole Miss remains on the road, heading to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to take on No. 14 LSU in a three-game series. Friday's affair will air on ESPN2, while Saturday's game can be seen on SEC Network and Sunday's finale will stream through SEC Network +. All three games can be heard through the Ole Miss Radio Network.
