Viveros Punches National Ticket on Day One of NCAA East Regional
5/25/2022 | Track and Field
Viveros is First Rebel Men’s Shot Putter to Qualify Since 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Ole Miss track & field junior Daniel Viveros punched his first career national ticket and became the first Rebel men's shot putter to qualify outdoors since 2009 to lead a successful first day of the NCAA East Region Preliminary Round Championships at Indiana University on Wednesday.
Viveros – a native of Bakersfield, California – remained steady through the ping-ponging of schedule revisions at a stormy first day of action in Bloomington, and when his turn in the ring arrived he set straight to work. On his first of just three attempts he tossed 19.04m/62-05.75, which put him in contention right off the bat. On his final attempt and with a ticket to Oregon already in-hand, Viveros let one fly 19.10m/62-8 – firmly booking passage to Eugene for the national meet and breaking his own school record set one month ago at LSU in the process.
His two 62-foot throws today mark the fourth-such throws in his last three tries since that LSU meet on April 30. Prior, his overall PR was 18.75m/61-06.25 from this year's SEC Indoor Championships.
Viveros is just the second Rebel to ever qualify in the men's shot put outdoors alongside Derek McGuire, who qualified for Ole Miss in 2006 and 2009.
The Rebel men also had a strong day of competition on the track despite running several hours earlier than anticipated due to a storm cell that wound up smashing into Bloomington right on schedule in the late afternoon hours.
All-American senior Baylor Franklin was the top overall qualifier in the first round of the men's 800-meter on Wednesday, running 1:47.78 to earn an auto qualifier spot to Friday's quarterfinal. Franklin is looking to book return passage to Eugene in the 800 after finishing as a Second-Team All-American in 13th place in 2021.
Like Viveros, Franklin is starting to peak at just the right time. Franklin has run sub-1:48 in each of his last four attempts this season after doing so only once prior in his career. Included in that stretch is an overall career-best 1:46.83 that earned him fourth place in the SEC final two weeks ago, as well as two on both Ole Miss Championship of America victories at the Penn Relays in the distance medley relay (9:29.45; ran a 1:47.75 third leg) and 4x800-meter relay (7:13.71; ran a 1:46.76 second leg).
SEC 1500-meter champion and reigning NCAA Indoor mile champ Mario Garcia Romo, alongside teammate Shane Bracken, took care of business with smooth races to earn auto qualifier spots to Friday's 1500-meter quarterfinal. Garcia Romo had the eighth-best time at 3:44.91 and Bracken the 14th-best at 3:46.03, with both earning their AQ spots out of Heat Two.
Ole Miss has sent at least one national qualifier in the men's 1500 each of the last six seasons, while sending multiple qualifiers in five of those six years. Garcia Romo finished fifth in the 1500-meter NCAA final in 2021, providing a tag team punch alongside third-place finisher and current professional runner, Waleed Suliman.
All-American senior Elijah Dryer booked his return trip to the East Region quarterfinal in the men's 200-meter dash following an auto qualifier performance on Wednesday. Dryer was third in Heat Five at 20.71 (+0.6), giving him an AQ spot to the quarterfinal for the second straight season. Dryer is looking for his first individual national ticket in his Rebel career after finishing 20th in the quarterfinal in 2021.
Ole Miss nearly had another quarterfinalist, though, as senior Kenney Broadnax came agonizingly short of advancing to the next round in the men's 110-meter hurdles. Broadnax fell less than one-hundredth of a second short in 25th place at 13.84 (+1.1), with spots 23 through 25 all falling within that same margin. Indiana State's Luigi Rivas (13.822) and Navy's Brahmir Vick (13.828) ended up edging out Broadnax's 13.831 and Army's Justin Young (13.831) for the final two spots.
Thursday it is the Ole Miss women's turn, with competition beginning at 9 a.m. CT in the women's hammer.
