Rebels Face Off Against No. 9 Navy in Annapolis

OXFORD, Miss. – In the final match of the fall slate, No. 1 Ole Miss rifle fell to No. 3 Kentucky, 4741-4723. It breaks a four-match win streak for the Rebels.
It took the reigning national champions shooting its second highest score of the season and a tying a school record in air rifle to take down the Rebels (4-2, 2-2 GARC). Kristen Derting led the team as the second-best performing individual of the field. The senior fired a solid 1184 aggregate. Julianna Hays posted a season and career best 1180 aggregate mark. Ole Miss posted a 2349 in smallbore and 2374 in air rifle.
Kentucky (5-0, 1-0 GARC) and Ole Miss shot the same smallbore score of 2349. The Wildcats had the top two smallbore shooters however the Rebels landed third through sixth in the standings. Derting led the way with a 589. Lea Horvath and Hays followed close behind, shooting a 587. The veterans, Derting and Horvath, both shot perfect in prone. In sixth, Emma Pereira was just one point behind with a 586. Katelyn Tinsley wrapped up the scoring for the counters with a 568. M'Leah Lambdin's 579 was a season-best for her.
Ole Miss fell behind the Wildcats in air rifle as they were outscored 2392-2374. Kentucky placed in the top four for air rifle and the Rebels took the next four places. Derting once again led the Rebels with a 595 and Horvath was right behind her, hitting a 594. The two freshmen, Pereira and Hays, scored career marks with a 594 and a 593. The other two counters, Martina Gratz and Emma O'Neel, scored a 592 and a 591.
Kentucky scored 4741 (2349 in smallbore and 2392 in air rifle) for their second-highest match score on the season. The Wildcats finished with four of the top five overall shooters. Sofia Ceccarello led all shooters with a 1189 aggregate as her 590 in smallbore and 599 in air rifle also at the top of the standings.

Scouting the Opponent
The Midshipmen are coached by former Olympian Mike Anti in his sixth season. Navy is coming off one of the best seasons in program history, breaking program records in each of the three scoring categories along with setting a new program-best team averages in each of the three disciplines. Navy is currently ranked No. 9 in the nation with an 8-4 record and 2-2 GARC record. The Midshipmen have won five of their last six matches, including a win over Ohio State before the break.
As a team, Navy averages an aggregate score of 4693.38 per match, which is eighth in the nation. The teams highest score came in a win against The Citadel, firing a 4714. Sophomore Marleigh Duncan is starting where she left off after a record-breaking freshman campaign. Duncan won individual smallbore conference title last season, becoming the first student-athlete in program history to win a GARC Championship individual title. She also holds the school records in aggregate match score and individual smallbore scoring at 592. Duncan averages a 1178.25 aggregate, a 592.25 in air rifle and a 586 in smallbore. Parker Haydin is second on the team in average aggregate score and in air rifle as a freshman. Haydin averages an aggregate score of 1177.88 and an air rifle of 591.75. He leads the team with a 586.13 smallbore score. Haydin's 595 in smallbore against The Citadel is the fourth best in the nation this season.
Series History
Ole Miss lead Navy in the all-time series 5-3 and on a two-match win streak. The Rebels last lost to the Midshipmen was on the road. Last defeating Navy in Annapolis in 2018 by a score of 4659-4657.
Off the Break
The Rebels have excelled in the match following the break in the season in recent memory. Ole Miss rifle has won the first game after the break three of the last four years with the lone loss being against No. 1 Alaska Fairbanks in 2022.
All four matches were against top-15 opponents. The Rebels took down No. 11 Ohio State in 2019 and 2021.

In the last four season, Ole Miss rifle is a combined 13-5 during the month on January. The Rebels compete in three matches this season in January.
Horvathing A Good Time
Lea Horvath became the only women in NCAA history to score a perfect 600 in air rifle three times in their career. The junior has scored perfect in every season of her career as a Rebel. She is one of four to shoot perfect this season.
Horvath also broke some school records. She tied the match smallbore score with a 594 and shatter the record for match aggregate score, which she previously held with a 1194.
Innocent Until Proven Tinsley
Sophomore Katelyn Tinsley steadily improved her scores throughout the season to the point of breaking career-highs in the win over No. 12 Memphis. She surpassed her career-high is smallbore with a 580 after topping her season-high in every match but one.
The Indiana native also bested her career-high in aggregate scoring with a 1166. She posted back-to-back 586's in air rifle. Her 591 in air rifle in the win over Murray State was also a career high.
Top of Her Game
Kristen Derting, the Oregon native, is shooting at a high level. The 2022 GARC Combined Second Team honoree has scored her career high aggregate of 1185 in two straight matches against UT Martin and No. 9 Army. Then proceeded to snap that score, shooting a 1187 against No. 12 Memphis.
Derting also broke her career-high in air rifle with a 598 in the win over UT Martin. She is currently averaging 587.2 in smallbore, 596.2 in air rifle and 1183.6 aggregate.
Freshman Duo
In their first year at Ole Miss, Julianna Hays and Emma Pereira are making significant impacts in the lineup. They are two of the 28 different shooters to score a 590 or above in the nation in smallbore. Hays, from Maplewood, Minnesota, has been a counter for the team in both smallbore and air rifle all season. She shot 591 and 593 in air rifle this season. She is third on the team for smallbore average, air rifle and aggregate score.
Pereira is one of Ole Miss' five smallbore counters. She shot a 593 in air rifle against UT Martin and in the same match scored a 590 in smallbore for an 1183 aggregate. All were season and career highs.
High Scoring
Ole Miss rifle has the eight highest scoring match of the season. The Rebels broke the program's all-time match score, scoring a 4743 in a win over No. 12 Memphis. In the same match they also tied the program record for smallbore score of 2361.
The Rebels have outscored their opponents 266 points the last four matches.
- Ole Miss rifle are back in on the range at No. 9 Navy on January 14, starting at 8 a.m. The Rebels look to bounce back after a loss to No. 3 Kentucky.

Then in air rifle, Horvath fired a perfect score for the third time in her career, making her the only women to do so in NCAA history. She combined for a career-high 1194 aggregate score, which breaks her own school record.
- Horvath's 1194 aggregate score is tied third highest in the nation with Julie Johannessen and behind only Peter Fiori and Mary Tucker.
- Katelyn Tinsley broke career highs in smallbore, air rifle, and aggregate score this season. Tinsley shot 580 in smallbore and a 1166 aggregate score in the win over No. 12 Memphis. She topped her air rifle score with a 591 in a win over Murray State.
