Men’s Golf La Sasso Leads After Round One of Fallen Oak
10/15/2023 | Men's Golf
Rebels in Third Through 18 Holes
BILOXI, Miss. – Ole Miss men's golf opened its final fall tournament at the Fallen Oak Collegiate Invitational, wrapping the first round at 289 (+1) and in third place. Michael La Sasso earned a tie for 1st placement with a hot start of 67 (-5).
Overall, the Rebels made 17 birdies and shot par for 55 holes on the day.
"That was by far our worst round of the fall," head coach Chris Malloy said. "The good news is they did battle and we're still in a position to make a run in this thing. Mike [La Sasso]'s round really saved us. We made a couple of birdies coming in as a group. Again, they fought their tails off but we've got to be a lot better than what we were today."
"I think we just have to hit the reset button," continued Malloy. "I just talked to the guys and we've got to clean up, simple, unforced errors. We had four putts, three putts, hitting balls into the water that we had no business hitting into the water, which is very uncharacteristic of what this group has done. Also, as I told them, we're not even halfway done with this golf tournament. There's a lot of golf left. They are in position, and we'll make a run. They have each of the first two events of the fall."
Teeing off of Hole 10, La Sasso played steady golf through the back nine and added a birdie on the 604-yard, par five Hole 15. It was at the turn that La Sasso launched himself up the leaderboard. The sophomore made four birdies, two being back-to-back, in the front nine to achieve a bogey-free 67 first round. His five-under start brought him tied for 1st heading into round two.
Competing individually for Ole Miss, Patton Samuels came back from a bogey on his first hole of the day to go on to make five birdies through the next nine holes. Samuels finished the day at 70 (-2) to sit inside the top 10 tied for 6th.
Tied with each other in 32nd, Tom Fischer, Kye Meeks and Tim Tillmanns all shot 2-over for the day. Fischer achieved a 2-under, bogey-free back nine, while Tillmanns made four birdies and Meeks carded three birdies overall.
Rounding out scoring for the Rebels is Cameron Tankersley, who shot 75 (+3) and looks to round two to improve his tied for 44th placement.
Ole Miss will continue its time at Fallen Oak tomorrow with tee times beginning at 10:30 a.m. CT on Hole 1. The Rebels will be paired with SEC foes Auburn and Mississippi State.
