Rebels Force Fifth Set But Can’t Top Bulldogs on the Road
ATHENS, Ga. – Battling all night with the Bulldogs, Ole Miss volleyball forced a fifth set but couldn't complete the comeback, falling 3-2 to Georgia Wednesday night inside Stegeman Coliseum.
Vivian Miller, Sasha Ratliff and Shayla Meyer led the Rebel attack each tallying double-digit kills. Miller led the way with 16, followed by Ratliff with 14. Meyer rounded out the trio with her fourth double-double of the season. Setter Sommer Daniel navigated the offense to a .246 clip behind a season-high 48 assists, and middle blocker Payton Brgoch tallied her 300th career block, finishing with seven.
Ole Miss got off to a hot start, scoring the first five points of the match. With the Rebels leading 15-11 at the media break, Georgia came back to briefly take the lead as it was the first team to 20. Not backing away, Ole Miss continued to apply pressure and finished off the first set 25-23, led by Meyer, who finished the set with five kills on .500 hitting, and Brgoch, who was a perfect 4-for-4 in the set.
The Rebels carried the momentum from the opening set victory into the second, jumping out to an early 8-3 lead. Attempting to erase another deficit, Georgia came within striking distance a few times, but Ole Miss continued to find an answer and cling to its lead. A late 4-0 run by the Bulldogs gave Georgia a 21-20 lead, its first of the set. Ole Miss once again found itself tied at 23 with Georgia; however, this time, the Bulldogs scored the final two points to even the match.
Tied at one set apiece, Georgia and Ole Miss fought to take an advantage in the match. After trading points early, the Rebs started to pull away and build up a five-point lead. UGA hung around and slowly clawed its way back to tie the set at 18 and take the lead at 21-20 before ultimately stealing the set from the Ole Miss, 25-22.
Battling to extend the match, the Rebels opened up an 8-4 lead after a kill by Julia Dyess. Like it had done all night, Georgia stormed back to tie the set at 10. From there, the two teams traded blows as the set featured 15 ties and two lead changes. In the end, it was Dyess and Ratliff who helped keep Ole Miss alive and force a fifth set.
With the match on the line, Ole Miss started off the fifth set on the right foot. The Rebels took a 3-1 lead on Miller's 16th kill. Georgia, however, responded to take a two-point lead as both teams swapped benches. The Bulldogs increased their lead to four out of the break and never looked back, taking the fifth set 15-9.
Ole Miss rounds out its five-match road swing on Sunday with an in-state showdown in Starkville against Mississippi State.
