Cross Country’s Loral Winn Named SEC Women’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year
10/25/2023 | Cross Country
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Ole Miss cross country senior Loral Winn has been named the SEC Women's Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the conference announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Winn – a senior native of Dresden, Tennessee – has been near the top of the pack all season long for the Rebel women, who enter this week's SEC Championships as one of five nationally ranked teams at No. 18. Winn has been instrumental in several impressive team finishes for Ole Miss, helping lead the Rebels to a team title at the Southern Showcase on Sept. 15 and a runner-up finish at Loyola's Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational on Sept. 29. At Loyola, Winn was Ole Miss' top finisher in third place at a career-best 19:53.0, her second career sub-20 6K time and just the seventh in recorded Rebel women's history.
Last season, Winn was an NCAA All-South Region honoree, as well as a Second-Team All-SEC member after her 10th place finish at the conference meet. On the track, Winn is a two-time All-American, a four-time NCAA East Region qualifier, a seven-time SEC scorer and was part of Ole Miss' first conference title in the distance medley relay in 2022. Across both track and cross country, Winn has contributed to several of the top national finishes in Ole Miss women's history – including a record 10th-place NCAA finish in cross country in 2021.
In the classroom, Winn has been just as excellent. She is a six-time USTFCCCA All-Academic honoree, and this past spring she completed her bachelor's in journalism with a 3.98 GPA. In honor of her superb undergraduate career, Winn was awarded the Taylor Medal this spring – the highest academic honor handed out by the University of Mississippi.
Winn is the first woman and the second Rebel in the combined men's and women's history of Ole Miss cross country to win the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, joining current teammate Aiden Britt, who was the co-men's winner last season. Overall in the history of the Ole Miss track & field and cross country program, Winn is the first woman to earn the distinction, as well as the fifth total alongside Britt (2022 cross country), Lee Ellis Moore (2011 outdoors), Craig Engels (2017 outdoors) and Mario Garcia Romo (2022 indoors).
Ole Miss is gearing up for the 2023 SEC Cross Country Championships, held this Friday, October 27 at South Carolina. Competition begins at 9 a.m. CT and will air live on SEC Network.
