Volleyball Falls to No. 19 Florida
10/25/2023 | Volleyball
OXFORD, Miss. – Playing at home for the first time in nearly three weeks, Ole Miss volleyball forced No. 19 Florida to the wire but dropped a tough match to the Gators in straight sets on Wednesday night.
The Rebels (8-14, 2-9 SEC) went toe-to-toe with the No. 19 ranked team in the nation but in the end, couldn't slow down the Gators' (14-4, 6-3 SEC) hot-hitting duo of AC Fitzpatrick and Kennedy Martin who combined for 31 kills on a .431 clip. Julia Dyess led a balanced Ole Miss attack with 10 kills.
Nia Washington and the Rebels started out hot, scoring the first three points of the match. They had an early four-point advantage over Florida until the Gators used a 6-0 scoring run to tie the match at 12 and take a 14-12 lead. Not backing down, Ole Miss took advantage of three straight errors to retake the lead to begin a back-and-forth affair. The Rebels continued to score in bunches as Dyess, Anna Bair and Sasha Ratliff rattled off another 3-0 run out of the media break to make it 18-15. Florida still wouldn't go away, battling back to tie the match at 23 and get to set point first. Ole Miss managed to fend one off, but the Gators took the first set 26-24 in extra points.
Both teams once again battled back and forth in the second set that featured 15 ties and seven lead changes. Tied at 13, the Gators looked to pull away, but a kill from Ratliff, followed by an ace from Bailee Middleton, gave the Rebels a two-point advantage at the media timeout. Out of the break, Florida responded, scoring seven of the next 10 points to tie things up at 19. Just as Ole Miss was looking to even the match, back-to-back kills from the Gators gave them a lead late. Faced with set point, the Rebels fought one off but couldn't complete the comeback, falling 25-23.
Fighting to stay alive and extend the match, Ole Miss and Florida traded points to start the set. Tied at 11, a kill by Ratliff sparked a 4-0 run to put the Rebels up 15-11 at the media break. Florida never went away though, lying within striking distance. The Gators erased the deficit and finished off the match with a 9-1 run to win in straight sets.
Ole Miss looks to bounce back on Sunday against Missouri at 1:30 p.m. CT in the Gillom Center.
