Rebels Downed By Early Penalty Kick Goal
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Ole Miss soccer (6-5-2, 2-3-1 SEC) went down to the wire with Mississippi State (8-3-3, 3-2-1 SEC) Sunday night but could not come away with a win, losing 1-0.
The difference in the match was a penalty kick awarded and converted by the Bulldogs in the 35th minute. Neither team put more than four shots on goal in what was a physical match from beginning to end.
Ole Miss outshot Mississippi State 5-4 and won eight corner kicks in the second half but ultimately could not find the back of the net.
Kelly Brady took five shots in the match, leading the attack for the Rebels. Addie Yelton got the start in goal for Ole Miss, making two saves. The match also marked the return of Shu Ohba in goal for Ole Miss as she started the second half and made one save.
In the 35th minute, a shot from Kennedy White was blocked by the Rebel defense and as it pinballed around in the box a foul was called on Lauren Montgomery, giving the Bulldogs a penalty kick try.
Ilana Izquierdo took the shot putting it off the fingertips of Yelton into the bottom left corner of the net and giving Mississippi State a lead they would not relinquish.
Ole Miss controlled the ball for the majority of the second half, winning eight corner kicks and taking five shots but could not grab the equalizer.
The Rebels will be on the road again next week as they travel to Columbia, South Carolina for a matchup with the Gamecocks.
