Women’s Cross Country Third, Men Fourth at NCAA South Regional
11/10/2023 | Cross Country
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Ole Miss cross country entered the conversation for either team or individual at-large berths to the national meet following third and fourth place team finishes by the women and men, respectively, at the highly competitive NCAA South Regional held at Florida's Mark Bostick Golf Course on Friday morning.
The 24th-ranked Rebel women knew the South Regional 6K was going to be a slugfest as one of five nationally ranked teams vying for the top-two automatic tickets to NCAAs, but Ole Miss came out swinging anyway with a third-place finish – thanks in large part to a crucial last push over the final kilometer. No. 15 Tennessee (61) and No. 6 Florida (79) ran away with the auto bids, but with 1K to go Ole Miss, No. 16 Alabama and No. 19 Lipscomb were all within striking distance of each other for that coveted third spot heading into Selection Saturday.
In fourth place and trailing the Tide by 19 with a little more than 1K to go, seniors Loral Winn and Skylar Boogerd helped push the Rebels up the standings, each moving up five spots individually while the remainder of the Ole Miss scoring delegation held firm. At the finish, Ole Miss had eclipsed Alabama, 95-98, with Lipscomb in fifth at 107, to put the Rebel women firmly in the discussion for an at-large berth.
The Rebels also did so in extremely fast fashion, with all the Ole Miss scorers clocking five of the top-six recorded times in program history. Winn led the way, moving into sixth place at the finish at a massive one-minute PR of 18:52.1, the fastest 6K time ever recorded by a Rebel woman. Senior Ryann Helmers was next, holding in 15th place at a 24-second PR of 19:03.9 (No. 2 Ole Miss history), with Boogerd right behind her after her late push, finishing 16th at a one-minute PR of her own at 19:05.2 (No. 3 Ole Miss history).
Junior Hannah Ielfield had a career day as well, scoring in 28th place at a one-minute PR of 19:33.2 (No. 4 Ole Miss history), with sophomore Sarah Schiffmann not far off in 30th to round out the scoring at a 43-second PR of 19:41.9 (No. 6 Ole Miss history).
Other Rebel women running on Friday were sophomore Sophie Baumann in 51st place (20:14.4, PR) and junior Madison Hulsey in 118th (21:07.7, PR). Winn, Helmers and Boogerd all earned NCAA All-South Region honors for their top-25 individual finishes.
The Ole Miss men, meanwhile, put together one of its most complete races of the season in the 10K after a tough season hampered by injuries. The Rebels have an uphill climb for an at-large bid after a fourth place team finish at 105 points, but still could see an individual presence at the national meet. No. 21 Tennessee took the South Region crown over No. 29 Florida State, 68-71, while No. 18 Alabama pulled away from Ole Miss late with 86 points to the Rebels' 105.
Senior transfer Cruz Gomez had his best race as a Rebel, clocking a big one-minute PR in ninth place at 29:13.0 for his second career All-Region honor. Fellow transfers Jack Meijer (13th, 29:17.6, PR) and Toby Gillen (15th, 29:19.8, PR) followed not far off to give the Rebels a trio of All-Region honorees and a low scoring pack.
All-American senior Cole Bullock just barely missed out on his third career All-Region honor, finishing 27th at a seven-second PR of 29:44.9, while junior Aiden Britt closed out the Rebel scoring in 42nd place at a 27-second PR of 30:24.0. Other Rebel men running Friday were junior Chase Rose (100th, 31:55.6) and sophomore Gabe Scales (111th, 32:20.8) in their first career 10K races.
