KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Ole Miss volleyball fell to No. 10 Tennessee on the road in straight sets Sunday in the Thompson-Boling Arena at Food City Center.
The Rebels (10-16, 4-11 SEC) couldn't slow down the hot-hitting Lady Vols (21-3, 12-2 SEC) attack as Tennessee hit .462 on the afternoon. Payton Brgoch led Ole Miss with nine kills on 13 swings.
Tied at three in the opening set, the Lady Vols opened up a 10-0 run, forcing Ole Miss to take both of its timeouts. Ratliff managed to side out for the Rebels, but it was too late as Tennessee would take the first set in dominant fashion, 25-7.
Ole Miss kept things close to begin the second set. The Rebels tied the match at seven, but Tennessee used a 4-0 run to jump out to an 11-7 lead. The Lady Vols continued to extend their lead, going up by as many as six. Not backing down, Brgoch helped Ole Miss chip away and make it a three-point contest at 21-18. However, the Rebels couldn't close the gap as Tennessee closed out the second set, scoring four of the final five points to win, 25-19.
Battling to extend the match, Ole Miss once again hung around with the Lady Vols in the early going. After Sasha Ratliff tied the set up at seven all, Tennessee scored three straight points to force an Ole Miss timeout. Nia Washington helped the Rebels pull back within three at 12-15, but the Lady Vols padded their lead back to five and went on to take the third set, 25-18, and the match.
Ole Miss returns to Oxford for its final two home matches of the season. The Rebels face off with No. 11 Arkansas on Wednesday, November 15, at 7 p.m. CT and host Mississippi State on Sunday, November 19, for Senior Day.
