OXFORD, Miss. – Battling with one of the top teams in the nation, Ole Miss volleyball took No. 10 Arkansas to five sets but fell in a heartbreaker on Wednesday night at the Gillom Center.
The Rebels (10-17, 4-12 SEC) won the first two sets to put No. 10 Arkansas (23-4, 13-2 SEC) on the ropes, but the Razorbacks fought back to win the match in five sets. Julia Dyess led the Ole Miss attack with 19 kills on a .245 hitting percentage. Payton Brgoch followed with 10 kills, bringing her to 600 in her career. Nia Washington also added 10 kills to the scoring efforts. Defensively, Brgoch and Sasha Ratliff combined for 11 of the team's 14 total blocks in the match. Finishing with six blocks, Ratliff moved into third all-time in program history with 385 in her career.
Ole Miss set the tone early, winning a gritty first set that featured 10 ties and three lead changes. The Rebels came out hot, opening up a 7-3 lead in the first set. Arkansas fought back with a 5-0 run to tie things back up at nine, and both teams began to battle back and forth as the score remained tied through 15. Looking to create separation, Dyess sparked a 5-0 run, giving the Rebels the jolt they needed to take the first set. A stuff by Ratliff set Ole Miss up with set point, and a kill from Dyess clinched a 25-21 first set victory.
The Rebels carried over their high level of play from the first set into the second. After a close start, Ole Miss broke away with a 5-0, featuring kills from Washington and Dyess as well as a pair of blocks from Brgoch. The Razorbacks clawed back within one point of the Rebels, but Ole Miss never relinquished the lead. Arkansas threatened to come back and steal the set, tying the score at 22. Despite the Razorbacks' effort, Anna Bair and the Rebels slammed the door and went up two sets to none with a 25-23 set victory.
Looking to avoid the sweep, the Razorbacks come back fierce in the third. Ole Miss and Arkansas exchanged six ties early in the set. The Razorbacks built up a four-point advantage, forcing the Rebels to call a timeout, trailing 18-14. Not giving the set, Ole Miss fought back to tie the match up again at 19. Unfortunately, Arkansas responded with four straight points and went on to win the set 25-21 and extend the match.
Fired up after taking the third set, Arkansas dominated the fourth. The Razorbacks forced Ole Miss to call both of their timeouts early after taking a 10-point lead. They went on to force a winner-take-all set after a 25-15 victory.
With the momentum slowly switching sides, the Rebels fought to stay alive in the match. Ole Miss started the fifth set strong, but a service error allowed Arkansas to score four straight points and grab a 10-6 lead. Trailing, the Rebels got back within two points, but the Razorbacks closed out the match with five unanswered to win 3-2.
The Rebels will host the Mississippi State Bulldogs for their final home match of the season on Sunday, November 19, at 3 p.m. for Senior Day.
