Track & Field Concludes Busy Split Weekend at Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Millrose Games

2/11/2023 | Track and Field

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Ole Miss track & field concluded a busy weekend of action across the country with solid performances all around at Arkansas' Tyson Invitational, Vanderbilt's Music City Challenge, and the 115th running of the Millrose Games in New York City on Saturday.

The performance of the day for the Rebels came at Arkansas, where freshman Logan Kelley put on a show in the open section of the men's pole vault. Kelley won at a massive nine-inch PR of 5.32m/17-05.50, which also registers as nearly one foot better than his prior collegiate best of 5.05m/16-06.75. Kelley was clean over his first bar of the day at 4.95m/16-02.75 before hitting on second attempts at new PRs of both 5.12m/16-09.50 and 5.22m/17-01.50. At his newest PR of 5.32m/17-05.50, Kelley sailed straight over on his first attempt to seal victory.

Kelley's clearance today puts him at No. 3 all-time in Ole Miss history indoors, trailing only Olympian Sam Kendricks (5.70m/18-08.25; 2014) and Peyton Weissmann (5.35m/17-06.50; 2020). Furthermore, Kelley now stands as the best Rebel freshman pole vaulter ever indoors, and combined he trails only four outdoor clearances by Kendricks his freshman season in 2012.

This season, that height currently puts Kelley No. 16 in the NCAA, No. 2 in the SEC, and No. 1 among all NCAA Division I freshmen.

Also having career days at Arkansas on Saturday were senior McKenzie Long in the women's 200-meter, who become the No. 2 performer in school history indoors at 23.29 (eighth place), as well as sophomore Iangelo Atkinstall-Daley in the men's triple jump, who finished ninth at a PR of 15.26m/50-00.75 to take sole possession of No. 15 all-time at Ole Miss.

Over at Vanderbilt, All-American senior Jalani Davis notched a season-best in the invitational section of the women's shot put. Davis was the runner-up to reigning NCAA Outdoor champion Adelaide Aquilla of Ohio State (17.79m/58-04.50), tossing 17.58m/57-08.25 on her fifth attempt. With that throw, Davis moves up to No. 6 in the NCAA and takes over the lead in the SEC this year.

Ole Miss also had several excellent performances in the seeded sections of the 3K races at Vanderbilt. In the men's 3K, seniors Anthony Camerieri and Shane Bracken were impressive again just one day after both broke the four-minute barrier in the mile. Camerieri won the 3K at a career-best 7:52.80, improving on his place in No. 2 in Ole Miss history and his second straight 3K PR after running 7:52.99 at Arkansas two weeks ago.

Bracken, meanwhile, chopped five seconds off his previous 3K PR, finishing runner-up to Camerieri at 7:54.54 to move up to No. 3 in school history.

In the women's 3K, senior Loral Winn came close to her PR in her first 3K of the season, finishing runner-up at 9:16.21. Freshman Sophie Baumann continued to shine, becoming the fifth-fastest in the 3K in school history after finishing third at 9:18.13. Other PRs included a 12-second improvement by senior Kristel van den Berg at 9:21.36 in ninth place (No. 6 Ole Miss history), and a 19-second PR 9:33.69 by senior Ryann Helmers in 17th place (No. 13 Ole Miss history).

On the biggest stage of the indoor track season over at the 115th Millrose Games in New York City, a handful of current and professional Rebels took to the track at The Armory in front of a national television audience. Freshman Cade Flatt made his Rebel debut, finishing eighth as the lone collegian in the 800-meter field at 1:55.26 – his first race since last July and his first since recovering from a recent ankle injury. All-American senior Tiarnan Crorken finished seventh in the invitational men's mile at 4:02.85.

Ole Miss was also represented in both Wanamaker Miles by Rebel greats and NCAA Champions Sintayehu Vissa and Mario Garcia Romo. Vissa finished sixth in the women's Wanamaker, breaking the Italian indoor mile record for her second straight meet at a four-second PR 4:24.54. Garcia Romo broke his own national record in the men's Wanamaker, finishing fifth at 3:51.79 to top the previous Spanish indoor mile record set in 1983.

Next week, Ole Miss will send two distance medley relay squads to Notre Dame's Alex Wilson Invitational on Feb. 18, while the remainder of the Rebel teams rest up for the SEC Indoor Championships, which are set for Feb. 24-25 at Arkansas.
